Soy tu dueña is a Mexican telenovela, and its international English title is A Woman of Steel. The show opens with a wedding that never happens. Valentina Villalba, heiress to a fortune her parents left her when they died during her childhood, waits at the altar while her fiancé Alonso Peñalvert abandons her there.
It is a clean engine: one betrayal, and a sweet young woman turns cold.
Soy tu dueña aired on Las Estrellas for one season of 146 episodes, from June 15 to August 20, 2010. Nicandro Díaz González produced it for Televisa. It is a remake of La Dueña, the 1995 telenovela created by Inés Rodena, adapted here by Kary Fajer.
Lucero and the Making of “La Víbora”
Lucero plays Valentina, and the role asks her to sell the turn. After Alonso leaves her at the altar, Valentina becomes bitter and authoritarian, retreats to her ranch, “Los Cascabeles,” and the town starts calling her “La Víbora” — the viper.
Fernando Colunga plays José Miguel Montesinos, the neighbor who falls for her beauty and her strong character and decides to win her anyway. Their courtship runs on land disputes. Gabriela Spanic plays Ivana, the envious cousin who wants everything Valentina has, including José Miguel.
The Cast Around the Ranch
The cast is deep in the way Televisa casts were deep in 2010. Sergio Goyri is Rosendo Gavilán, the ranch foreman in love with Valentina. Silvia Pinal is aunt Isabel, Ana Martín is nanny Benita, David Zepeda is Alonso. Jacqueline Andere and Eduardo Capetillo round it out.
A Remake That Knew Its Lineage
Colunga and Spanic had already shared a screen in 1998’s La usurpadora. Colunga and Lucero had paired twice before, in 2005’s Alborada and 2009’s Mañana es para siempre. The show leans on that history.
Univision introduced Soy tu dueña in the United States because Corazón salvaje, airing weeknights at 9pm/8c, was the least watched telenovela in prime time. Soy tu dueña took that slot and became the most watched telenovela at 21:00. The Univision run went from June 1 to December 27, 2010, with Triunfo del amor replacing it on January 3, 2011.

What Actually Holds Up
The premise is a machine, and machines age well. Valentina’s transformation gives Lucero a long stretch as a woman the audience is meant to dislike before the show softens her. That is the performance worth the 146 episodes.
What matters most is the structure underneath. This is Rodena’s story, remade fifteen years after La Dueña. The reasons it still works:
- Lucero’s turn from heiress to “La Víbora” and back.
- Colunga and Spanic’s second pairing, which the show leans on hard.
- Rosendo Gavilán, the foreman whose love for Valentina complicates the ranch half of the plot.
- The land-dispute courtship, which keeps José Miguel and Valentina apart without a villain doing the work.
The weak spot is Ivana. Envy is her whole engine, and the show rarely gives Spanic anything past it. Alonso’s conspiracy with her drives the altar betrayal, and the source stops there.
Soy tu dueña is a remake that understood its inheritance. The betrayal lands, the nickname sticks, and Univision’s 21:00 slot ended up with the most watched telenovela in it. That is what the record shows, and it is enough.
