Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters has finished a run that no other movie on the service has come close to matching. The animated fantasy musical stayed in Netflix’s top 10 weekly charts for 63 weeks, collecting 1.128 billion hours watched and 676.9 million views in the process. It finally fell out of the charts in week 64.
Netflix acquired KPop Demon Hunters from Sony Pictures Animation last summer, replacing what was originally set up as a theatrical release with a streaming premiere instead. The gamble paid off handsomely for all parties concerned. The film turned into a chart-topping phenomenon that viewers couldn’t stop watching.
The Numbers That Broke Netflix
The majority of Netflix original films hold attention for a brief spell, often a matter of weeks, with some fortunate titles managing to last a month or two. KPop Demon Hunters, however, followed a distinct path, maintaining its appeal far longer than most.
The movie kept gaining interest for weeks and held strong for months, which is how it wound up becoming Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time, based on views accumulated during its first 91 days. But it didn’t fall off after that.
None of the other Netflix original movies or licensed films have reached these numbers, which places a great deal of pressure on KPop Demon Hunters 2.
Why The Sequel Starts With An Advantage
One thing the sequel gets right is its beginning. The first installment came to Netflix as an original property with little fanfare.
During its opening weekend, the film drew in just 9.2 million views and 15.4 million hours watched, marking the smallest numbers it posted in any of its first 24 weeks.
KPop Demon Hunters 2 should be a massive hit from the jump. Fans will be eager to see Rumi, Mira, and Zoey again and experience all of HUNTR/X’s new songs.
The Impossible Standard Ahead
The expectation for sequels is that they should be bigger than what came before them, whether measured by the scale of their story or the numbers that determine how successful they are. What KPop Demon Hunters has done is establish a nearly unattainable benchmark for its own follow-up, as well as for every other Netflix original that comes after it.
The sequel would need a miracle to match the first film’s success. Few movies manage even a fraction of KPop Demon Hunters’ viewership numbers.
The chances of a sequel topping the first film’s audience appeal are slim, even if it ends up being better than the original.
| Metric | KPop Demon Hunters | KPop Demon Hunters 2 (Projected) |

What The Sequel Should Actually Worry About
As work on KPop Demon Hunters moves forward, comparisons to its sequel’s performance, but that can’ will inevitably arise and become the central point of discussion.
The first production found its audience through a story and characters that people loved, along with the music, which drew listeners in. What made it work was the combination of these elements, including the animation, and KPop Demon Hunters 2 will need to make sure all of them measure up to that standard.
The audience’s satisfaction determines whether the sequel succeeds. If they enjoy it, they will rewatch it, show it to others, and spread its songs and viral moments.
That is easier to do when the movie is great. The only way KPop Demon Hunters 2 falls flat is if viewers are disappointed with what comes next.
A Head Start Won’t Be Enough
The biggest opening for any Netflix original movie is what I expect KPop Demon Hunters 2 to achieve. The sequel stands to inherit a ready audience from the first film’s performance.
The first film struck lightning in a bottle, so not even Netflix will be expecting the same results twice, which means the sequel will need to hold onto its audience for months just to approach the original’s overall success.
Lower Numbers Still Count As A Win
KPop Demon Hunters 2 won’t need to match the original’s performance to be a hit. The streamer will be able to count KPop Demon Hunters’ follow-up as a success with lower figures.
Should the numbers keep rising, then Netflix and this franchise will be set.
Who Made The Original Film
Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang directed the original production, which runs 96 minutes long and reached audiences on June 20, 2025. Arden Cho provides the voice for Rumi, while May Hong voices Mira.
The people working on the project include writers Hannah McMechan, Chris Appelhans, Maggie Kang, and Danya Jimenez. Michelle Wong is the producer.
The Bottom Line For Netflix
A standard has been set by the first film that is unlikely to be surpassed. Sequels are expected to be bigger than what came before, yet KPop Demon Hunters established a benchmark for streaming that seems to defy those very rules.
The original’s success came from audiences falling in love with the story, characters, and music. The sequel’s job is to deliver on those same elements, not to chase a number that took a once-in-a-lifetime run to produce.
Should KPop Demon Hunters 2 please fans, it will succeed on its own terms. The 63-week streak was a phenomenon, not a formula to copy.
