Tom Petty died suddenly in 2017, but his bandmates kept playing. On Wednesday night, the surviving members of the Heartbreakers reunited at the Americana Music Honors & Awards in Nashville, and they brought back a man who had not sat behind the drums with them in decades.
The six remaining Heartbreakers — Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Ron Blair, Steve Ferrone, Scott Thurston and Stan Lynch — performed together at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. They opened with “American Girl” and “Breakdown,” joined by country star Chris Stapleton. Then they moved to “You Wreck Me,” adding Ferrone and Thurston to the lineup.
Lynch left the band in 1994 and had not played with them since they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002. That made this a rare live moment for a group that has spent the last quarter-century mostly apart.
The Night’s Other Winners
The ceremony also handed out other Lifetime Achievement Awards. Robert Plant performed at the event, and the late Dolly Parton accepted her award through a pre-taped message. Parton passed away a few weeks after the message was recorded.
Emmylou Harris introduced Parton’s acceptance, and Brandi Carlile and I’m With Her paid tribute by covering “Coat Of Many Colors.”
Molly Tuttle won the Americana Artist Of The Year award. Tyler Childers took home Album Of The Year for his record Snipe Hunter. The night’s other performers included Margo Price, S.G. Goodman and Kathleen Edwards.
What Happened On Stage
The performance began with the four original Heartbreakers taking the stage. Campbell, Tench, Blair and Lynch played “American Girl” and “Breakdown” with Stapleton beside them. The crowd got two of Petty’s most famous songs back-to-back.
Then the band grew. Ferrone and Thurston joined the rest of the group, and the full seven-piece Heartbreakers hit “You Wreck Me.”
“That’s a song.”
The line is simple, but it captures the feeling of the room. The Heartbreakers had not played together in 24 years, and the crowd knew it.
The Rest Of The Ceremony
The night’s other honorees carried their own weight. Plant performed his own material at the ceremony, and his presence added to the evening’s rock history.
Parton’s acceptance was delivered through a pre-taped message, recorded before her death. Emmylou Harris gave the introduction, and Carlile and I’m With Her covered “Coat Of Many Colors” as a tribute.
The Americana Artist Of The Year winner was Tuttle. Childers took Album Of The Year for Snipe Hunter. The other performers included Margo Price, S.G. Goodman and Kathleen Edwards.
The Songs That Shaped The Night
The three songs performed by the Heartbreakers each carried a different meaning:

The Box Set Announcement
The following day, the Tom Petty estate announced the 50th anniversary box set Origins 1971-1978. The set includes previously unreleased tracks from Petty’s earliest days, and the estate shared a video of one of those songs, “Parade Of Loons.” The whole package comes out 11/6 on UMe.
The box set announcement adds to the sense of continuity. Petty’s music continues to find new life, and the Heartbreakers continue to play it.
The Americana Music Honors & Awards gave its Lifetime Achievement Award to Petty and his Heartbreakers. The surviving members accepted by doing what they have always done best: playing the songs.
