Mages Inc, the Japanese studio behind Steins;Gate, has released Juggernaut, a free-to-play FPS that leans heavily on atmosphere over skill. The game is described as a “vibe-coded” shooter, which suggests it relies more on style than substance. It is being distributed as a boomer shooter, and it comes from the studio best known for its visual novels.
Huge waves of zombies get shot down in flat, pixellated arenas. The game has a look that recalls a Wolfenstein-style retro shooter, and it also ships with a paid level editor known as the Juggernaut Assets Maker.
The AI Breakdown
Mages Inc has published an AI Breakdown for Juggernaut on its Steam page. The breakdown states that the source code is 100% generated by AI. Graphics are 60% AI, sound is 50% AI, and effects are 100% AI.
A comparable warning appears on the Juggernaut Asset Maker’s own Steam page, which states: “The source code for this application was generated using generative AI.”
A studio known for Steins;Gate
Mages Inc has been around for over 20 years. It is best known for Steins;Gate, which has nearly 6,000 “overwhelmingly positive” reviews on Steam. The recent Steins;Gate Re:Boot, released on August 20, already has nearly 600 “very positive” reviews.
The studio has also worked on recent iterations of the Corpse Party series. It has released at least one Xbox 360 action game that never came out outside Japan.
Fan complaints
Some Steam users are not happy about the AI approach.
“If you don’t care enough to make a game why should I care enough to buy it?”
On the Juggernaut discussions board, that question has been raised. The game itself is free to play, although the Assets Maker will require payment. The Steam page promises players the chance to “Make it more Japanese” and “Make it sexier.”.
AI games on Steam
Nearly half of all games released on Steam every week come with AI disclosures, and most of those are less open than Mages Inc has been about its loose stats-driven method.
Most games created largely through generative AI pass unnoticed by Steam’s discovery systems, and this problem has become particularly pronounced with the current surge of similar-looking incremental titles.
A comparison of disclosures
| Game | Source Code | Graphics | Sound | Effects |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Juggernaut | 100% AI | 60% AI | 50% AI | 100% AI |
| Juggernaut Assets Maker | Generated using generative AI | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
The open question
The question of whether this is the first entirely vibe-coded game from a renowned studio remains open. The reporting offers no answer on that point.
What comes next
Mages Inc. is set to release Juggernaut, and players will be able to sample it for nothing once it launches. The Assets Maker, however, will need to be paid for.
