Valheim’s long-awaited 1.0 update has brought well over a hundred thousand players back to the Viking survival game, pushing its Steam numbers to a five-year high.
At the time of writing, around 160,000 people are simultaneously playing Valheim on Steam, according to SteamDB. That is the game’s biggest concurrent crowd since April 2021, a strong sign that the five-year wait for the full release did not hurt interest in the crafty sim.
1.0 launch numbers
The jump back to 160,000 concurrent players is a notable milestone for Iron Gate’s breakout hit. The studio ended early access earlier today, and it appears many players were waiting for exactly that moment to jump into — or back into — the game’s adorably polygonal world.
Valheim has not been able to capture lightning in a bottle twice, though. At least, not yet. The early access peak of over half a million players remains untouched.
That peak came over five years ago, when 502,387 players logged on at the same time. It was aided by memes that sailed across the web and a playerbase that wasn’t totally pandemic-free yet.
The gap between the two numbers is significant. The current surge sits well below the historic high, and the difference shows just how unusual that early access moment was.
Today’s Steam stats may also be skewed by the fact that Valheim is now available on more platforms than ever before. The game is playable on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S consoles, which means the Steam crowd no longer represents the entire Valheim crowd.
That platform expansion matters for reading the numbers. Players who might have logged into Steam in 2021 now have other options, so the Steam-only figure is not a complete picture of who is playing.
Deep North and new gear
The Valheim 1.0 update arguably matches the game’s incredible launch stats when it comes to sheer content volume. Iron Gate’s new patch notes are almost 1,800 words long, and they pack in a lot of newness.
The headline addition is a new biome called Deep North. The update also brings a large batch of fresh gear and tools to craft.
Here is a quick rundown of the major additions:
- A new biome called Deep North
- Over 40 fresh weapons
- Lots of new bits and bobs and hammers to craft
- A graphics setting to stretch draw distances
- Much more
The patch notes are too extensive to neatly summarise here, but the long story short is that Valheim 1.0 adds a significant amount of new content for returning players. If you have not touched the procedurally generated afterlife in a while, there is plenty of reason to come back.
The new graphics setting is a quality-of-life improvement for players who want to see further across the game’s sprawling landscapes. The fresh weapons and craftable items give returning players new systems to explore and experiment with.
The sheer scope of the update is part of why the game is drawing players back. A patch this large gives both lapsed players and newcomers a reason to start fresh or continue their existing journeys.
Console split
The console releases are a complicating factor in reading today’s numbers. Valheim’s Steam player count no longer tells the whole story of who is playing the game.
PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S players are all in the mix now. The Steam figure is what SteamDB tracks, and it is the number most readily available.
Valheim is available on Mac, PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. That is a wide net, and it means the game’s total audience is spread across multiple platforms.
The split playerbase makes the Steam-only figure harder to read as a total measure of the game’s health. What is clear is that PC players came back in force for the full release.
First weekend test
The real test will be the first proper weekend of release. The early signs are good, but the early access record remains a tall order.
The fact that Valheim reached a five-year high on launch day suggests the game’s core audience never really left. They were waiting for the moment the game was finished, and 1.0 gave them that moment.
Whether the game can sustain this momentum is another question. The early access peak was a cultural moment as much as a gaming one, and replicating that kind of viral energy is hard.
For now, Iron Gate has reason to be pleased. The five-year wait did not hurt the game’s popularity all that much, and the 1.0 update has clearly brought people back.
Valheim has not beaten its own record, but it has proven that it still commands a huge audience. The numbers are strong, and the weekend will tell us more.
The game heads into that weekend with momentum, a fresh biome, and over 40 new weapons for players to try. That is a solid position to be in.
