Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be “around 200GB” says game director, as he details Sephiroth and Vincent Valentine DLC plans.
That is the headline takeaway from a new interview with director Naoki Hamaguchi, who spoke to VGC about the final part of the FF7 Remake trilogy. The game is set to launch 8th April, 2027 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. And Hamaguchi is not worried about the scale.
The Size Question
VGC reports that Hamaguchi confirmed the game cannot fit onto a single disc, nor even two discs as Rebirth did. His explanation for this limitation is straightforward: the file size will be enormous.
“Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game,” he says. “I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.”
The figure shows that Revelation exceeds its predecessor’s size substantially. Rebirth clocked in at 91GB on Switch 2, 145GB on PS5, 169GB on Xbox Series, and 155GB on PC. In certain formats, Revelation appears headed toward being up to twice as large as the previous game in the series.
| Platform | Rebirth Size | Revelation Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 | 91GB | Around 200GB |
| PS5 | 145GB | Around 200GB |
| Xbox Series | 169GB | Around 200GB |
| PC | 155GB | Around 200GB |
The contrast stands out sharply. Rebirth was already a weighty addition to the Remake series, and its successor looks to be nearly twice the size across every platform.
DLC Plans
After Revelation launches, players will get two additional DLC packages, according to Hamaguchi, who says they will be roughly the same size as the Intermission DLC for Remake.
He says “It’s best to imagine the DLC like what we did with Intermission: digging deeper into the characters of Vincent and Sephiroth,” and then goes on to explain “In regard to whether those stories take place in the past or the present, I’m not going to tell you that now, but we’re excited to reveal that.”.
The Intermission DLC for the original Remake expanded on Vincent and Sephiroth’s characters, and now the spotlight returns to them.
The Size Debate
Hamaguchi is fielding a lot of questions about ‘size versus quality’ in the last game in the Remake series. Whether the size comes from the divisive side activities on offer in the title, or from the fact it won’t be shipping totally on-disc at launch, the conversation around the game’s scale is already underway.
The Hardware Problem
Hamaguchi presents the size problem as something that must be solved through engineering rather than a decision made by design. He argues that the game has to work around the hardware, and it is precisely this struggle with the equipment that causes the file size to grow so large.
The numbers themselves do not seem to trouble him. It is a striking sign of his assurance, considering the size of what is at stake.
What the Size Means for Players
The issue of length matters to players. Titles requiring more than 100 hours of play time are too much for many grown-ups with jobs and obligations to manage, as shown by the earlier-linked review of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave.
The game’s 200GB footprint demands real consideration of storage space. Players must plan ahead for that much room on their drives. The sheer size of the installation makes it a serious undertaking.
The Launch Date
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches 8th April, 2027. The game will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Four distinct systems make up the platform lineup, a noteworthy accomplishment for a game of this scale.
Our Verdict
A vast scale is promised here, a game that aims to hold all the material the Remake series has accumulated over years inside its package, which carries the weight of 200GB.
The sheer scale of the collection is thrilling for someone who has followed the series from the beginning. For someone with a packed schedule, however, it is overwhelming.
The director’s self-assurance is comforting. Hamaguchi has spoken with him previously regarding open world game design, and his responses appear to allay any concerns, at least.
It is not yet known whether the trilogy will end well. Its entire structure may fall apart beneath the strain of its wide-open ambitions.
For now, the announcement functions as a show. One game director confessing that his project will probably reach 200GB comes across as more amusing than alarming.
The game is still getting worked out. The size is not final. But the direction is clear: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is going to be enormous.
