Buffy the Vampire Slayer almost got a proper sequel show, but Hulu canceled the project. The show already had its perfect sequel 18 years before Hulu’s attempt, and it ran for more than a decade.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer came from Joss Whedon’s mind and ran on The WB and UPN from 1997 through 2003, lasting for seven seasons. It joined fantasy, horror, drama, and comedy into one show centered on Buffy Summers, the newest Vampire Slayer, who fought monsters while still living her teenage life. Around her stood her Watcher Giles (Anthony Stewart Head), her best friends Xander (Nicholas Brendon) and Willow (Alyson Hannigan), and a changing cast of vampires and demons that gave the world its shape.
Hulu’s Canceled Reboot
Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning as Buffy Summers in a reboot that was officially announced in early 2025. Ryan Kiera Armstrong has been cast as the new Slayer, and Chloé Zhao was attached to direct the pilot episode. The project was ultimately canceled.
Nobody has said whether the creators of the canceled Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV reboot considered the comic book sequels, or if those stories would have affected its own tale.
Compared to the TV show, the comics enjoyed far greater creative freedom. New monsters, magical dimensions, and original villains were added to the lore. A TV reboot would have been hampered by story, theme, and budget constraints, which would have made matching the comics’ scale difficult.
The reboot faced a difficulty with the comic books. Because they were always considered canon, the show’s history would have to include them as part of its own past. Not all viewers of the original series read the comics, so the reboot would have to handle continuity between the two media carefully.
Five More Seasons in Print
Dark Horse Comics published the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic books from 2007 through 2018, expanding the canon with five complete seasons. A separate version of the series, running at BOOM! Studios, appeared between 2019 and 2024.
The comic sequel continued the show’s story in numbered seasons:
- Season Eight — Set a year after the show’s end, with Buffy and Xander leading command-central in Scotland. Willow becomes the mentee of a powerful demon.
- Season Nine — Buffy moves to San Francisco. The spinoff series Angel & Faith runs alongside it.
- Season Ten — Buffy and the crew encounter a new type of vampire that can shapeshift and walk in sunlight.
The seasons continued:
- Season Eleven — A supernatural disaster leads the government to force magical creatures and Slayers into internment camps. Buffy and Willow lose their powers.
- Season Twelve: The Reckoning — Buffy gets caught in a time warp that could alter the fate of the world and serve as a definitive end for Buffy, the Slayers, and her loved ones.
The Comic Sequel’s Legacy
A year after the TV finale, the comic sequel gave fans a direct continuation of the story they already knew. The format allowed writers to go bigger than what broadcast TV permitted.

Since the series wrapped up, its reputation has continued to expand. Over 20 years on, it remains regarded as one of the most formative shows of its time. The comic books carried the narrative forward across five seasons.
Many years ago, Buffy received an official sequel that ran for five seasons in print, long before the canceled Hulu reboot had its chance to exist at all. That series remains part of official canon, and it offers proof that the show’s story continued beyond the original series’ end.
A second part still exists, ready for whoever wishes to discover what came after the TV series drew to a close.
