Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, has warned players that the game will need around 200GB of storage when it launches next year. The Square Enix developer spoke to VGC about the install requirements for the remake trilogy’s long-awaited conclusion, and the numbers are large.
“Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game.”
Hamaguchi made the warning during an interview with VGC, where he was asked about additional downloads for physical versions of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. He confirmed that the final chapter of Cloud and Sephiroth’s story will be especially demanding.
The Storage Warning
The director’s admission comes with a caveat. He understands that the topic draws a lot of opinions, but he wants players to know the reality of the situation.
“I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent,” Hamaguchi said.
He also addressed the question of physical copies. Discs may be dying out, or they may be staying — nobody knows for sure yet. But the team wanted to deliver a physical product regardless.
“Even though the game will not be on the full disc, in the position we’re in, because discs may be dying out, or maybe staying, with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, we definitely wanted to deliver some kind of physical product. That was really important to us. Trust me!”
Why the Size Matters
Managing installed games is like packing a suitcase for a trip. You have to choose what comes with you and what stays home. When a big game asks for 200GB of space, hard decisions have to be made if you don’t want to shell out for more room.
Individual install sizes often vary between platforms. Players have learned to live with this as games grow increasingly complex. It’s a debacle that Hamaguchi and the rest of the Square Enix team are surely aware of, but that doesn’t mean anyone was willing to compromise the quality of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.
A Larger File Does Not Mean a Better Game
In a separate post on X/Twitter, Hamaguchi acknowledged that a larger file size may not necessarily mean a better game. There are other reasons to look forward to the 2027 release date.
“However, this title is the culmination of more than 10 years of work from our development team and serves as the conclusion to the FFVII Remake series,” he said. “We are committed to delivering a game that not only meets the expectations of our fans, but is also a work that we, as creators, can be truly proud of.”
The Platforms and the Date
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches for PC via the Epic Games Store and Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The release date is April 8, 2027.
IGN already got a taste of what’s to come and shared its findings in two recent previews. Players will learn why the game takes up so much space when it arrives next year.
What Players Should Expect
The warning is straightforward. The game will need 200GB of space. That is a lot of room, and it will test the limits of whatever system you own.
Hamaguchi’s promise of a physical product is notable. The industry is moving away from optical discs, but Square Enix is making one anyway. Whether that means a limited edition or a standard retail copy is not clear from the interview.
The Long Road to Completion
More than 10 years of work went into this project. That is a long time to wait for a conclusion. The director’s commitment to pride in the finished product is a fair one.
The game will meet fan expectations, he said. It will also be a work the team can be proud of.
Preparing for the Launch
The warning gives players time to plan. If you have a PC, you can check your current storage before deciding whether to upgrade. If you have a console, you may need to consider external drives.
The April 8, 2027 date is fixed. The storage requirement is fixed. The only variable is how you prepare.
Our View
The warning is honest, and the promise of a physical product is sincere. Square Enix is acknowledging that the future of discs is uncertain.
A 200GB game is a statement. It is a signal that the developers are pushing the boundaries of what a game can do. It is also a practical problem for anyone with a limited hard drive.
The director’s warning is a gift. It tells you what is coming so you can decide early whether you have the space.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is a conclusion to a long story. It deserves to be treated with respect. That respect starts with knowing what it requires.
The game will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S for the April 8, 2027 launch. The team has worked for more than a decade on this project, and they want to finish it with dignity.
The warning is a reminder that the final chapter is demanding. It is also a reminder that the journey has been worth it.
