Fable Heroes Review: A Charming Spinoff With a Thin Core

A romp through Albion with tiny heroes, coins, and disguises, yet the camera and combat sag beneath the charm.

Four tiny heroes battle monstrous foes amid a fantastical realm.

Fable Heroes wants to be a family-friendly romp through Albion, and mostly succeeds, but its ambitions stop short of greatness. Released on 2 May 2012 for Xbox 360, the game is a hack-and-slash adventure built around co-op play, with a twist: beating it unlocks items and characters in Fable: The Journey, a separate Kinect title. The concept is clever, but the execution sags under repeated combat and thin content.

Four Heroes, One Side Scroller

Players choose from 12 characters drawn from the four Fable games, presented as small dolls rather than full avatars. The game supports up to four players, either online through Xbox Live or local multiplayer, and that’s where its charm peaks. Boss fights and waves of smaller enemies keep the action moving, though the camera often struggles to keep pace with fast movements.

Coins, Disguises and Hidden Items

The core loop is simple: fight enemies, gather coins, spend coins on upgrades, characters and items. Coins also unlock content in Fable: The Journey, which is a nice tie-in. Along the way, players find hidden chests containing temporary abilities like Slow Time and disguises like a Hobbe Costume that let you pass through enemy lines unseen. These touches add variety to otherwise repetitive combat.

Mini-Games and Side Content

The game includes separate mini-games inspired by the series, including mine cart racing and chicken-dodging challenges. These breaks from the main campaign offer a change of pace, though they feel like filler rather than essential additions.

Ted Timmins on the Design

Ted Timmins, the lead designer, described the project as bringing a modern touch to the old side scroller format. That ambition shows in the presentation, even if the gameplay beneath it doesn’t fully live up to the promise.

Weak Points

Fable Heroes isn’t without flaws. The camera often fails to keep up with fast action, and some enemies repeat across levels without much variation. The game’s length is modest, and once the main campaign ends, there’s little reason to return beyond chasing leaderboards and time trials.

Final Verdict

Fable Heroes is a competent, occasionally charming spinoff that leans heavily on co-op play. Its cross-game unlocks are a smart idea, and the mini-games offer a welcome break from the main campaign. But the combat drags, the camera hiccups, and the content is thin enough that it won’t hold long-term attention. For a quick session with friends, it works. As a full game, it falls short.
