Lioness fans got one of the biggest surprises imaginable in the Season 3 finale: the woman who ordered Joe’s abduction was not a stranger. It was Aaliyah Amrohi, the character played by Stephanie Nur, who had secretly plotted against Joe twice.
Aaliyah’s Dark Turn
The twist was shocking because viewers last saw Aaliyah as a romantic lead. Her story began when Cruz Manuelos, played by Laysla De Oliveira, assumed a false identity as Zara to get close to Aaliyah. The mission was to gain access to her father, Asmar Ali Amrohi, played by Bassem Youssef, and then kill him.
The two women developed a torrid love affair. But Cruz had to kill Aaliyah’s father and her terrible fiancé, then flee without saying goodbye. That betrayal left Aaliyah with a grudge — and now she has acted on it.

Nur’s Overwhelming Response
Nur told DECIDER that the fan response to Aaliyah’s return has been “overwhelming.” The actress said she barely slept after the finale aired, as her phone lit up with messages from audiences across time zones.
Taylor Sheridan himself called Nur with the news. “I think I screamed right into the phone,” she said. “I had no idea what Taylor had been plotting.”
From Dream to Reality
The actress’s admission that she was “having dreams as Aaliyah” after Season 1 finished filming adds a warm touch to the story. She was still in character months after the wrap, and that connection made her ready to return.
“It was my job to portray what her mental and emotional state would be after she learned that Joe had escaped once again,” Nur explained. She did that beautifully, even when the script called for Aaliyah to act before going after Cruz.
A Painful State of Mind
Nur describes Aaliyah as a sensitive person who wore her heart on her sleeve. She came to love from an almost innocent perspective, with little experience in that area. When she fell for Zara, she fell hard.
The betrayal hurt deeply. Aaliyah has been in a “suffering place” for a long time, and her pain must be incredible. Nur does not have details about what her character has been through, but she believes the last few years have been difficult.
The Return in Doha
Aaliyah emerged from her bathtub in her opulent Doha apartment in a scene that felt almost Bond-villain-esque. Nur said the welcome back was warm, though there was not much of a wardrobe fitting.
The scene was shot in Texas, and the Doha skyline was added through CGI. Nur got to see the beautiful room beforehand, complete with a pink marble bathtub that was really deep.
Where the Revenge Lands
Fans are right to wonder why Aaliyah went after Joe first instead of Cruz. Nur acknowledges the question is valid but points to the emotional complexity of the situation.
“Wherever there’s hate involved, there’s also a lot of love,” she said. “If you are feeling strong emotions of betrayal or pain, it’s usually because it comes from a place of having loved very hard.”
Nur believes Aaliyah may be biding her time before confronting the woman she knew as Zara. The actress refused to commit to a timeline, saying the question is best left to Taylor.
A Heartwarming Testimony
The positive fan response has clearly touched Nur. She said she is super excited and so happy that Aaliyah’s return resonated with audiences.
“It’s just a testament to Taylor’s great writing,” she said.
What Comes Next
Nur is ready to dive back into the role, though this Aaliyah is not the same one audiences met almost three years ago. The actress admits she was in the dark about the plot until Sheridan called her directly. Her screams into the phone were real, and her joy at the news was genuine.
The question of whether Aaliyah will confront Cruz directly remains open. Nur’s own answer is that love and hate often sit together — and Aaliyah’s pain runs deep.
The audience will have to wait to see how it plays out. But after that phone call, Nur is not the only one who knows Aaliyah has never been far away.
