On May 19, 2025, a human behavior expert named Liz Rose posted a list of five body language signals on TikTok. The post has gathered more than 90,000 likes, and it teaches viewers how to spot when someone may not want to converse with them. Commenters have responded with both jokes and practical suggestions about asking questions directly.
The American Psychological Association provides a fuller explanation than Rose’s list. According to the APA, body language consists of the way thoughts and feelings come across through posture, gestures, facial expressions and other movements. The organization also points out that a person does not always willingly show certain nonverbal behavior, which means it may not be correctly read by others.
The Five Signs Rose Listed
Rose notes that drooping lids may signal a lack of engagement in a discussion, yet she acknowledges that such a sign might merely reflect a person’s natural countenance or a drowsy state.
She presses her lips into a thin line, which can indicate discomfort or reluctance to keep speaking. Still, pressed lips can express many feelings beyond those two, so the setting around the gesture is what truly counts.
Disinterest is marked by a raised chin, according to Rose, and that gesture can appear dismissive or distant. Its exact meaning hinges on posture, the relationship between people and other circumstances.
A wrinkled nose makes up the fourth sign. Rose points out that such a gesture can show disapproval, though it has other possible causes too. The setting matters most when reading facial signals.
Rose describes pinching the bridge of the nose as a final signal, one that might point to frustration or discomfort in particular circumstances. It can, however, stem from tiredness and stress instead.
Commenters Joked With the Signs
A few people treated the signs literally — or claimed to, which added to the joke. Another person admitted they played along, ignoring the signs and keeping up the conversation until the other person grew increasingly uneasy.
One user made light of a situation where someone was complaining about their irritable bowel syndrome while the other person had their eyes shut and their fingers pressed firmly over their ears.
“Rather than trying to work out each expression, it is better to ask the person directly.”
Asking Directly Is the Better Method
A reader offered a useful observation. They noted that there could be multiple explanations for the conduct, including the possibility that the individual’s mind was preoccupied or needed to be somewhere else.
The best approach is to simply ask. Rose’s list is amusing, yet body language can only suggest how a conversation is going — it cannot read minds with certainty.
