Ed Boon, NetherRealm development chief, has spent the past few days playing a strange game of denial with the internet. Fans who have waited years for Injustice 3 got a response this week — and it came in the form of a joke, followed by a wink.
The rumor mill had been humming for years anyway, but this week, the website MP1st dug up evidence suggesting Supergirl and Batwoman were on the roster of the unannounced fighting game. Supergirl made sense — she starred in Injustice 2, the nine-year-old game. Batwoman’s inclusion, if true, would mark her debut in the mainline series.
Boon Answers a Satirical Post
Boon started by answering a satirical post on X / Twitter that said NetherRealm was “partnering with Insomniac to deliver the first AAAA fighting game.” He replied with a 100% denial, followed by a smiley face. The joke was on everyone, but it was unclear whether Boon knew he was joking.
The Testing Rumors
Then came the real questions. Another person asked whether NetherRealm was testing Injustice 3, Mortal Kombat 13, or Mortal Kombat 9 right now. Boon answered quickly: “All false.”
The Follow-Up Post
But Boon wasn’t done. Later, he posted a follow-up that suggested the opposite: “Appreciate the interest & enthusiasm,” he said. “But just because a game isn’t currently being tested externally doesn’t necessarily mean the game isn’t in development.”

The takeaway is simple: Injustice 3 is not being tested externally right now, but that does not mean it is not in development. All of which leaves fans exactly where they started: waiting for an announcement, perhaps at The Game Awards in December.
What the Resumes Suggest
There is another wrinkle. Injustice 3 has already appeared on a number of staff resumes at the studio. That suggests the game exists in some form, even if its name has not been confirmed. It might be called something else entirely — a different title that is essentially another Injustice game. Or it could be the start of a new DC fighting game series.
Gunn’s Role in DCU Games
The DC Universe, led by James Gunn and Safran, has been steering the company in a new direction. In 2025, Gunn and Safran said it would be “a couple of years” before fans got their hands on the first DCU games. Gunn said the pair have been hands-on with new projects at studios like NetherRealm and Arkham developer Rocksteady.
“We see designs for the projects in their very earliest stages,” Gunn added at the time. “We talk about those. We talk about when they’re talking about what the story might be, we say, ‘Well, maybe you want to go this way because we’re planning on maybe doing something with this character and so forth and so on,’ and help to deal with that.”
None of that rules out Injustice 3. It just means the path to announcement is not yet clear.
Boon’s History of Trolling
Boon has a history of trolling on social media. His posts could be part of some clever misdirection. But the simplest answer is often the true one: NetherRealm’s next game is Injustice 3, and it will be announced soon.
For now, the question remains open. Will Supergirl and Batwoman show up on stage in December? The wait continues.
