Bungie teases Marathon's future: a permanent PvE mode, deathmatch, a samurai Bishop shell, and a new zone.

Bungie is not letting Marathon die quietly. On September 24, the studio posted a blog titled “The Future of Marathon,” promising a permanent PvE mode, a deathmatch experiment, a samurai-inspired Bishop shell, and a new zone. The game may not have reached as many players as Bungie hoped, but the studio is doubling down on content.

What’s Coming In December

The first major update arrives in December with the Symbiosis update. It brings Marathon’s first permanent PvE mode, though Bungie admits it is still finalizing details. The studio also confirmed an experimental deathmatch mode, which is exciting given how strong the game’s gunplay is.

“This experience offers a more direct, lower-commitment way to sharpen your skills and compete without putting a full run at risk,” Bungie said.

December will also see a new Bishop shell described as “Marathon’s high-performance robot samurai.” It is fast and lethal, built around ambushes and melee damage. A social space with a firing range is in the works, letting players try out guns and shells in a non-deadly setting.

Perimeter’s starting zone gets a visual overhaul, with more high-end loot and a new boss fight against a large alien Tick Queen.

The March 2027 Plan

Bungie’s longer-term ambitions stretch into early 2027. The studio describes the plan as a “much larger evolution” for the shooter. The March update will include:

  • A new interconnected system of PvE, PvP, and PvEvP modes
  • A new onboarding experience
  • Changes to progression and the Cradle system
  • More focused questlines and new narratives
  • A completely new zone
  • New alien combatants

Bungie also made clear that Marathon is not complete without Pfhor. The studio said it wasn’t a Marathon game if players weren’t shooting the franchise’s famous Pfhor, suggesting they may have evolved since the original trilogy.

Managing Plans With Fewer People

Bungie’s plans come after layoffs at Sony. The studio now manages its roadmap with fewer staff, which adds pressure to deliver on these promises.

Update Feature
December Symbiosis Permanent PvE mode, experimental deathmatch, Bishop shell, social firing range
March 2027 Interconnected PvE/PvP/PvEvP system, new zone, new alien combatants

Why This Matters

Marathon’s future is tied to Bungie’s broader strategy. The extraction shooter has not become the massive hit the studio hoped for, but the blog makes clear the game is far from finished.

The deathmatch mode is a direct nod to classic shooters. Bungie is betting that players who love the gunplay will return for competitive play. The interconnected system suggests Bungie wants Marathon to feel more like a living game, with multiple paths through its content.

Turning Things Around

Bungie is betting that bigger, more varied content will draw players back. The March 2027 update could be the moment Marathon finally clicks with a wider audience.

The stakes are real. After the layoffs, Bungie has to prove Marathon can survive. The deathmatch mode, new zone, and alien combatants are the kind of bold moves that signal the studio is still committed.

By March 2027, the game will have a permanent PvE mode, a new interconnected system, and new alien combatants. That is a lot of ground to cover, and Bungie will need to execute on its promises to make this vision real.
