The panel for American Idol returns with Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie all coming back to judge the show as it enters its 25th season. Emmy Award-winning OG host and producer Ryan Seacrest is joining the group as well.
Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN, Bryan confirmed the news during his concert.
The Health Update
It is a happy end to an eventful week for Richie, who recently underwent a procedure to correct his atrial fibrillation, a condition that kept him off the road. “The doctor said everything went perfectly,” a rep for the “Dancing On The Ceiling” singer told Billboard in a statement. “Lionel is doing great, but will take some time off and will be back on stage soon.”
That procedure was performed to address the heart condition that had kept Richie from traveling for a period of time. His doctors reported that the surgery went without issue, and the rep’s statement framed the outcome as a success rather than a setback. The statement did not describe any complications or delays. The message was clear: the operation was completed, and Richie emerged from it in good health.
The Judges Together Again
Bryan and Richie are remaining with Underwood for the next stage, while Seacrest resumes his duties as both host and producer following his Emmy win.

Auditions Are Open Now
Auditions are currently underway with the return of Idol Across America, the live virtual search for the next Idol. The program is working its way across all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., giving hopefuls a chance to perform face-to-face with an American Idol producer.
Hopefuls have until Oct. 9 to sign up. Contestants must be 15 years or older by Feb. 15, 2027 to audition, and video auditions will be accepted if you cannot attend your state’s date.
The format gives contestants two paths into the competition. Those who want to appear in person can travel to their state’s scheduled stop. Those who cannot make the trip can instead submit a video audition. Either route keeps the door open for anyone who wants to try out.

The Current Champion
Missouri mom Hannah Harper is the reigning Idol champion, having won season 24 and becoming the first female country singer crowned since Underwood claimed the title in 2005.
