Takafumi Noda is leaving Vanillaware behind, and he is taking the studio’s signature style with him. The veteran developer, who worked on games like 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and Dragon’s Crown, has started his own studio called Ignisphere. His first project is a new RPG called Dawngazer, and he wants it to become a multimedia fantasy world.
A teaser trailer accompanies the announcement, and it offers a vivid look at a bustling town populated by humans and humanoid characters. A catlike creature moves through the scene, and the royal family’s members begin to disappear. The trailer closes with a soldier laying flowers upon their graves. It is a brief glimpse of the world Noda is constructing, and it is sufficient to give viewers some sense of its shape.
Noda’s Time At Vanillaware
Before leaving Vanillaware in March 2025, Noda was a beloved figure within the studio. He was known for his leadership and his artistic talent, which came through in the studio’s emphasis on hand-drawn art. His work includes Unicorn Overlord, Dragon’s Crown, and the mecha-infused adventure 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.
The studio Vanillaware has built a reputation for artistic odysseys, with titles ranging from high-fantasy settings like Unicorn Overlord to works where Dragon’s Crown, or in modern settings such as the one seen in the critically adored, mecha-infused adventure 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. Noda”s attention to detail touched everything he touched, from design to scenario writing.
The Ignisphere Project
The Ignisphere project goes beyond a single game, serving instead as an original world capable of supporting multiple productions across various media. Founded by Noda, Ignisphere Studios stands behind it as its creator, positioning it as a multimedia property that can spin stories across platforms while keeping them anchored within the same universe.
Noda sees the project as a means of telling stories across mediums within the same world. He told Automaton Media that “novels and merchandise can show places, characters, and history that can’t be fully depicted in a game.” He added that “in the game, the focus is on the story experienced by the player, but other media can showcase different countries or characters.”
Dawngazer And Its Platforms
The centerpiece of the project is Dawngazer, a brand-new RPG from Good Smile Company, which is set to arrive on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC in 2028. Monochrome Corporation, a firm with a track record in both anime and game production, is backing development. Kadokawa, the Japanese media conglomerate, is also part of the project.
The Teaser Trailer
The teaser trailer offers a brief glimpse into the world of Dawngazer. It features an unnamed female soldier protagonist moving through a bright town filled with both human and humanoid inhabitants, accompanied by fellow soldiers and a catlike creature. A folk song rises above the scene from start to finish.
The trailer closes with the royal family our growing party appears to be battling against. They quickly vanish, leaving our hero alone to lay flowers upon their graves. This ending speaks little, yet it displays some striking 2D animation for its world and a wide range of characters, fitting for the larger goals of the project.
What the trailer offers is a promise of what lies ahead. It suggests the depth of the world being constructed by Noda, even if the particulars remain concealed.
Worldbuilding For Expansive Projects
The people behind Ignisphere built the game with worldbuilding at its core. Noda has long been known for his exacting attention to detail, whether it’s design, scenario writing, or anything else. Giving him full control over a project that lets him move beyond mere gaming into realizing his ideas should prove quite interesting to watch.
In his previous work, Noda has demonstrated a dedication to detail that extends well below the surface. His record includes design, scenario writing, and the execution of his ideas.
The Partners Behind The Project
The game is being published by Good Smile Company, with Monochrome Corporation supporting its development. Kadokawa is also involved in the project.
Japanese media company Kadokawa and Monochrome Corporation share an industry connection, with Monochrome having produced both games and anime, while Kadokawa operates as a major conglomerate within the Japanese media sector.
