Marshals Season 2 is coming back soon, and the people behind the show want you to know exactly what to expect. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut and cast members Luke Grimes, Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, and Tatanka Means stopped by CBS’s 2026 virtual press day to talk about the new episodes, and they’ve been pretty open about the plot twists and guest stars heading their way.
The season picks up right where the first one left off. After the team united to fight armed men hired to kill Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), the finale had everyone moving in different directions. Cruz (Santos) was heading to D.C., Belle (Kebbel) and Cal (Marshall-Green) got caught up in a shooting match before Cal’s oncology appointment, Kayce was growing closer to Dolly (Ellyn Jameson), and Tate (Brecken Merrill) was on his way to Texas with Season 2’s villain Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey).
The Renewal Is Official
CBS renewed Marshals for a second season in March 2026, just ahead of its third episode. The network announced the renewal after the series premiere became the “best network TV launch since 2017” and “most streamed CBS episode ever.”
The announcement came with praise for the show’s performance. CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach called it a “breakout performance” that captured a “massive audience across platforms.”
When Marshals Season 2 Comes Out
Marshals Season 2 premieres Sunday, October 4, 2026 on CBS, with streaming on Paramount+. The official synopsis for Episode 201, “All Hat No Cattle,” reads: “When Kayce realizes Tate has been taken hostage, he goes rogue in a desperate race to save his son as the Marshals uncover a powerful criminal operation tied to the East Camp land grab. A violent showdown ensues, putting everything Kayce cares about at risk.”
The premiere will air at 8:30 p.m. ET due to an NFL doubleheader. Starting October 11, Marshals returns to its usual Sunday 8:00 p.m. ET/PT time slot.
What Storylines Carry Over
Hudnut told reporters that the sophomore season is trying to raise the stakes. “We’re all very proud of the work that we’ve been doing since May. This cast has endured a lot of big episodes already, and we’re only about halfway through filming,” he said. “We’re really trying to up the stakes in Season 2. We have a lot of exciting twists and turns. We’re upping our production value. We get helicopters, we got a bronc riding team, we have a rodeo. So we’re really just trying to give the fans more of what they took to in Season 1.”
The show’s production is expanding beyond the quiet scenes that defined Season 1. Helicopters, rodeos, and a bronc riding team suggest a bigger scale, and the cast has already hinted at the personal costs that come with it.
Cal’s Cancer And The Team’s Response
Cal’s cancer treatment is at the center of the sophomore season. Marshall-Green teased that the illness will ripple through the group. “We’re smack dab in the middle of the cancer treatments, and without giving anything away, it’s going to directly affect the team,” he said. “There are going to be some dominoes that fall because of it, and there are going to be some new leaders on the team.”
He added, “I think you’re going to find that it’s not the easiest thing to move through for him. It’s going to close a window for him, but open a door for others, and I look forward to it.”
Kayce’s Relationship With Dolly
Kayce’s romance with Dolly is also a focus. Now that Dolly’s father is the enemy, Grimes said Kayce is dealing with trust issues. “Obviously he wasn’t having the easiest time opening up. He’s always been kind of a guarded person and losing Monica, the one person that he did share everything with, was very hard for him,” Grimes said. “Even though he and Dolly hadn’t gotten that close or intimate yet, I think he opens up just a little bit, and then that happens.”
He continued, “Throughout the beginning of [Season 2], he’s dealing with, ‘Is it me? Am I the reason like bad things happen to these people?’ And he starts to wonder if he should maybe ever open up again. It affects him in a big, big way.”
Tate’s Return From Texas
Tate’s trip to Texas with Weaver is unresolved. How he gets home safely remains unclear, and the season will have to explain what Weaver’s next moves are.
“I think what Kayce’s dealing with is really watching his own son, this season, turning 18, becoming a man, and trying to figure out what kind of Dutton man is he putting out into the world?” Hudnut teased. “There’s definitely a theme throughout this season: as Kayce found his own path in Season 1, what path is Tate going to find this year?”
Jefferson White Returns As Jimmy
Yellowstone fans will also get a familiar face. Jefferson White is reprising his role as Jimmy Hurdstrom. CBS confirmed that Jimmy will remain the same good-hearted yet rough-around-the-edges ranch hand who evolved from a troubled criminal into a resilient, proud cowboy.
Not much is known about what White’s recurring role will entail, but the confirmation means Yellowstone viewers have another reason to tune in.
The Villain Behind The Land Grab
Tom Weaver is the villain of Season 2. The synopsis ties him to the East Camp land grab, describing a criminal operation that drives the Marshals’ investigation.
The season’s official synopsis describes a race to save Tate, a criminal operation, and a violent showdown that puts everything Kayce cares about at risk.
