Allison Janney appeared on Lost only once, and that single episode changed the show’s ending. Fans of the ABC drama know the cast that carried it through six seasons, but the finale rested on a character they only met once: Janney’s Mother.
Janney recently won her eighth Emmy for her role on The Diplomat. Her Lost cameo, in the Season 6 episode “Across the Sea,” answered two of the show’s biggest mysteries.
Janney’s One-Episode Role
The episode is the only one in the series that features no new footage of the main cast. Instead, it follows Janney’s character, the Mother, as she helps a pregnant woman give birth to two boys on the island. One is named Jacob; the other is unnamed.
The Mother raises the boys together. She takes them to a cave with golden light streaming out of it, explaining that the cave is the heart of the island and where the island gets its power. That was the first solid answer the show ever gave for the island’s magic.
The Boys Grew Up
Jacob grew up to become the protector of the island. His brother killed Janney’s character and became the black smoke monster when Jacob threw him into the cave with the glowing light. Jacob buried the bodies of his brother and the Mother next to each other — those are the same remains the main cast come upon in Season 1.
Why Janney Carried the Episode
The episode was unusual for the show. Without the main cast, it needed a strong performance to hold attention. Janney delivered it.
Her performance was brilliant enough to carry the episode and set the show up for its finale, an episode that truly broke the internet.
What the Episode Set Up
The episode answered two major questions:
- The island’s magic comes from the heart of the island, a cave with golden light.
- The black smoke monster is Jacob’s dead brother, thrown into that cave.
It also explained why the Mother’s remains were found alongside Jacob’s brother in Season 1.
