Amazon MGM is releasing Mahershala Ali’s new film slowly, with it currently playing in just six theaters in New York and Los Angeles to $199k. That figure represents a solid opening for the rollout, which the distributor says is being compared to American Fiction, the 2023 multi-Oscar winner starring Jeffrey Wright.
Director Bassam Tariq’s Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother stars Ali as Latif, a deeply religious hitman who struggles to reconcile his job, his faith and his role as a father. When his wife passes away, he embarks on a perilous trip across Houston to safeguard his children.
Opening Numbers
Rotten Tomatoes has certified the film Fresh with a 97% score, and exit polling shows that 60% of viewers gave it an excellent rating. The per-screen average stands at $33.1k, which points to solid attendance at individual locations. The top two categories for audience reaction were 89%. Overall, 80% endorsed the film.
Who Came To See It
A hefty 47% of the audience was aged 25–34. Some 72% of the crowd was non-white, with 41% African American, 18% Hispanic and 19% Asian.
Kevin Wilson, Amazon MGM Studios head of domestic theatrical distribution, framed the film’s appeal directly. He noted Tariq’s young cinephile audience and the attention Ali’s presence brings.
The American Fiction Comparison
Wilson offered a clear comparison point. “The best thing is other moviegoers telling their friends how good the film is,” he said. Both films come from Amazon MGM’s Orion Pictures banner, which has performed strongly under President Alana Mayo, with titles including Nickel Boys, Till and Bottoms.
The film’s launch was strong and limited, with an opening of $224k, before the pace slowed during its rollout. That shape matches what Amazon MGM is now using as its own approach.
The Rollout Plan
The expansion is proceeding steadily. Next week, the film reaches 15 sites, among which are Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Austin. The week after that, it arrives in 10 to 12 regions and opens on 30 to 40 screens. By Oct. 16, it moves into moderate release at 500 to 800 venues.

Other Indie Openings
This weekend also saw several other independent releases open. One of these was Ha Chan,Shake Your Booty! from Sony Pictures Classics, a film directed by Josef Kubota Wladyka. It opened to $236.6k on 540 screens.
Jay Baruchel’s The Stunt Driver, distributed by IFC Films, opened at 670 locations with a total take of $102k.
The film Deep In The Heart 2: A Texas Rivers Story, which Ben Masters directed with narration by Ethan Hawke, took in an estimated $60k from 80 locations across the state. Its predecessor, Deep in the Heart: A Texas Wildlife Story, narrated by Matthew McConaughey, grossed $480k.
Janus Films released the 4K re-release of Douglas Keeve’s UNZIPPED exclusively at the Film Forum in NYC to $24k, including sold out Q&As. The doc chronicles the launch of Isaac Mizrahi’s legendary Fall 1994 collection, and it expands nationwide in October.
Holdovers
Magnolia Pictures’ The History Of Concrete grew to 50 screens, where it took in an estimated $350k, pushing its total earnings to $511k. The film is set to reach over 50 locations next week.
If I Go Will They Miss Me, starring Danielle Brooks and J Alphonse Nicholson and directed by Walter Thompson-Hernandez, reported $158k in week 3 on 101 screens for a $758k cume. Many engagements saw higher box office this weekend over last despite fewer shows, a sign of strong word of mouth.
American Doctor from Watermelon Pictures passed the half million mark with $23k at 30 theaters. The cume to date is $556.7k for the Gaza-set documentary that opened Aug. 14.
R-rated kids show horror satire Buddy from Roadside Attractions is looking at another $717k from 709 runs for a cume pushing $26.4 million since its Aug. 28 opening.
EKKL Entertainment’s Daniel And The Fiery Furnace, distributed through faith-based channels, has posted a second weekend gross of $1.5 million across 1,301 screens, pushing its cumulative total to $6.2 million.
What This Means For The Film
The launch plan counts on people talking to each other. Amazon MGM is depending on viewers recommending the film to friends, just as American Fiction built its audience gradually.
Initial reception looks promising: the picture carries a 97% Tomatoes score, a 60% excellent rating, and an 80% definite recommend, suggesting the film has held up well thus far.
By industry standards, the rollout plan is modest, and that is precisely the idea behind it. Amazon MGM is positioning this as an awards contender, and the gradual approach allows the film to develop naturally rather than being overwhelmed.
So far, the movie’s success is genuine. It may or may not reach the scale of American Fiction, but the pieces are all present: a beloved star, a director with an established following, a strong critical score and a word-of-mouth engine that has already begun to run.
The movie deserves attention, and its release strategy allows it to reach viewers gradually, one cinema at a time.
