Bear Grylls Walked Out of the Wilderness 20 Years Ago — and ‘Man vs. Wild’ Still Sets the Standard

Bear Grylls takes on the wild alone, and Man vs. Wild sets the standard for survival TV.

Bear Grylls drops himself into the wild and walks out again, and Man vs. Wild makes that look easy. The show ran seven seasons, 66 episodes, and a pilot before Discovery ended it in 2012, and it remains the clearest shape of the survival genre.

The Setup

Grylls picks a popular wilderness destination where tourists often get lost or in danger. He shows up alone, with almost nothing, and builds a shelter, finds food, and gets back out before dark. The premise is simple. The execution holds attention.

What Works

The show’s strength is in its pacing. Episodes move fast, cutting between Grylls moving through the landscape and his commentary on what he’s doing. The camera stays close on his hands, his face, the ground beneath him, which gives the viewer a sense of being there alongside him.

Where It Falls Short

Some viewers find the show repetitive. Seven seasons mean the formula repeats itself often, and the stakes don’t always rise with the episode count. The show also faces questions about how much of what happens is staged, though the source doesn’t address that directly.

The Urban Turn

Grylls moved from the wild to the city with Worst-Case Scenario, a show about surviving disasters in built environments. That shift, which premiered May 5, 2010, on Discovery, broadened the approach without losing the core appeal.

The End of the Line

Discovery ended its legal relationship with Grylls in 2012 over contract disputes. The show was canceled, and the series simply stopped.

Back Again

Netflix brought Grylls back in 2019 with You vs. Wild, an interactive series with eight episodes running roughly 20 minutes each. It kept the format alive, but the original show remains the high point.

The Numbers

  • Show: Man vs. Wild
  • Network: Discovery
  • Premiere: October 27, 2006
  • Seasons: 7
  • Episodes: 66
  • Pilot: “The Rockies,” March 10, 2006
  • Premiere date: November 10, 2006
  • Came back on Netflix: April 2019, as You vs. Wild

Our Call

Man vs. Wild set the mold for survival television, and it still holds up as the best version of that mold. The show is confident, clear, and rarely dull, even when the formula grows familiar across seven seasons.
