Grand Theft Auto 6’s $400 Collector’s Edition Proves Publishers Keep Ripping Off Fans

A $400 box of branded trinkets sells for a king's ransom — yet contains nought of the game itself. A grave warning to the gaming trade.

A box of branded trinkets sits empty of any game within, a silent rebuke to the gaming trade.

A new collectors box for Grand Theft Auto 6 is on sale, and it comes at a price of $400. However, there is a catch — the package itself does not include a copy of the game inside. Instead, Rockstar’s Goodtime State – Vice City Collection appears aimed at a particular audience.

Inside the box you will find a swizzle spoon, sunglasses, and additional branded goods. That covers everything.

The Box’s Contents

The $400 fee gets fans access to merch that Rockstar would typically give away to a YouTube content creator or Twitch streamer. The package does not come with a copy of the game.

Piscatella on the Shift

When Sony said it would stop making physical games, industry analyst Mat Piscatella saw a broader shift. He wrote about it in July, saying “In a world where consoles potentially cost $1k+ the focus shifts from trying to attract the mass market to targeting only the most affluent with the least price sensitivity and highest preference for convenience.”.

Zelnick Defends Going Digital

Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive, defended the decision to go all-digital with GTA 6 in August. He said discs “don’t really make sense for the consumer.” The same logic applies to the Goodtime State box. After the cost of the items themselves — which, at a glance, is nowhere near $400 — an offering like this is pure profit for Rockstar.

Atlus Price Comparison

Collector’s editions have gotten pricier in recent years. A 2017 Take Your Heart version of Persona 5 sold for $89.99, including the game, a plush, a duffle bag, a hardcover book, a soundtrack CD, and a decorative box. In 2026, a similar Persona 4 Revival offering costs $249.99 for the game, an art book, keychains, DLC, a storage box, and a little statue of the protagonist.

A figurine could be preferable to the plush and duffle bag, but its price, nearly three times the cost of the P5 special edition, makes it difficult to justify. The GTA 6 Goodtime State box also fails to include the game itself.

The Long-Term Question

The move toward focusing on big-spender whales rather than growing audiences appears to be the reason collector’s editions have gotten pricier. Selling transparently overpriced merch to a microscopic segment of your game’s audience does not look like a particularly viable long-term business strategy within an industry dealing with serious challenges.

A Cheaper Option

Collector’s editions can be quite enjoyable when you decide to treat yourself to one, though the pattern behind them merits attention.
