A jury in Ohio has found former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn guilty of murdering his wife Ashley, and the verdict comes with evidence that Flynn planned the killing for months. The 40-year-old worship pastor was convicted on multiple counts, including aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and three counts of tampering with evidence.
The shooting took place in the early morning hours of February 16, 2026, in the Flyns’ home in Tipp City, Ohio, about 20 miles outside Dayton. Ashley Flynn, 37, was killed by a gunshot wound to the head while she slept in her bed. Their two daughters, then aged 9 and 11, were asleep in the next room during the attack.
The Text Messages That Proved Intent
The case turned on more than 100,000 text messages exchanged between Flynn and his mistress, Alleigha Botner, 24, a worship leader at the same Tipp City church. The messages were presented to the jury as part of the prosecution’s case.
One exchange showed Flynn’s resolve to commit the act even if it meant facing eternal consequences. He wrote, “I was up until 4 a.m. last night crying, literally trying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail. If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat. That is how dark and how hateful I feel.”
Another message sent the night before the murder revealed his final decision. Flynn wrote to Botner, “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow, February 16, a day I’ll never forget.” Botner has not been charged with any wrongdoing in connection with the case.
Trial Testimony and the Staged Crime Scene
Opening statements began on Friday, September 18, and closing arguments ended Tuesday, September 29. The jury deliberated for just two hours today after a week of testimony.
Flynn initially told police that his wife had been shot by an intruder. Investigators suspected early on that the crime scene had been staged to look like a burglary.
The American Idol Appearance
Flynn’s time on American Idol was marked by public displays of devotion to his wife. During his “Road To Hollywood” interview from 2013, he spoke warmly about Ashley and his faith.
“I absolutely love the Lord, and I love my wife more than anything,” he said. “She is very, very pretty. I love her. I’m just a normal person who absolutely loves to sing more than anything in the world.”
A Husband Who Planned His Own Crime
The irony of this case is that Flynn appeared on national television singing about his love for Ashley while secretly planning her death. His public image as a devoted husband stood in stark contrast to the man who wrote about killing his wife and covered up the crime.

Flynn sobbed after the verdict was read. The sobs did not change what the jury found.
