The Witcher 3 Remastered has broken a Steam concurrent-player record, and people are rushing back to play a new and improved version of one of the best RPGs ever made. The 11-year-old open-world game peaked at under 100,000 players when it first appeared on the platform. Today it is over 120,000 and still climbing.
The Numbers Behind The Record
When the game first appeared, Valve’s store had far less traffic than it does now, particularly in regions like China. Sales and updates over the last few years have driven numbers up considerably, yet nothing has approached today’s peak. The 2023 next-gen update for consoles, which likewise made its way to PC, fell well short of matching those heights.
The remastered update is free to anyone who already owns the game, while it is currently discounted by 50 percent. That pairing accounts for the hurry. The update bundles more than just gameplay tweaks and visual upgrades; it also delivers wholly revamped UI systems alongside fresh additions such as a photo mode that lets you adjust both the weather and the time of day at will.
CD Projekt Red’s website carries a full set of patch notes with more than 70 separate fixes and adjustments listed within them. Among the platform-specific changes, PS5 gets new graphics modes while Switch gains in-menu support for a pointing device. On PC, the hardware requirements for playing at the highest settings now call for a GeForce RTX 5080 paired with 24GB of RAM.
What Changed And What Didn’t
The most notable visual improvement comes from the lighting, which has gotten much better. Enhanced GTAO and shading lift the overall look of the game. The Global Illumination system, however, delivers results that are inconsistent.
The Switch 2 owner base is being treated to something unusual. The first Switch version was one of the more ambitious ports, yet it came with so many sacrifices that it was difficult to recommend, especially for those who had no other means of playing it. Initial accounts point toward a result on Switch 2 that matches the quality seen in last year’s Cyberpunk 2077 port. A single user shared handheld-mode video of the new edition, which appears to look superior to the PS4 and Xbox One editions, although it renders at a fairly modest resolution of about 720p.
The Pigeon That Survived
Some fans were worried that the unofficial mascot of the series had been buffed out of existence. A low-poly pigeon was photographed and went viral back in 2023. The meme lives alongside pictures of Geralt in a bathtub. When one player took a photo of a pigeon standing on the ground from the remaster that showed it with a new level of detail, players freaked out, worried that CD Projekt Red had murdered low-poly.
The alert turned out to be mistaken. The street pigeons have never matched those that fly. The low-poly pigeon that flies remains in place, staying put so we don’t upset too many people externally OR internally!
Kotaku was told by a representative that the flying machine remained untouched, while the one on the ground received additional refinement instead.
Our Own Impressions
After spending several days with the remaster, I will be sharing more detailed impressions soon. For now, my general impression is quite positive, even though I am not fully sold on all of the visual changes. Mostly, I am glad for the additional incentive to revisit a masterpiece. The game still holds up remarkably well.
Everyone who already owns the game gets the remaster as a free upgrade. The concurrent-player record proves just how many people want to play it again. The pigeon is safe, the pigeons in the air are safe, and the game has returned to its rightful place: at the top of the charts.
