Tracker has spent two seasons building up Mel Day, the new assistant hired by Reenie, and now the show’s creator wants to answer the question everyone has been asking: what happened to Mel’s mother?
Mel joined the CBS procedural during Season 3, Episode 3, where she was played by Cassady McClincy Zhang as a character named Mel. Her job interview is where she first disclosed that her mother, who served as an Army logistics officer, was found shot dead in her car at a rest stop when Mel was just 16. The case remains open, with no killer ever brought to justice.
TVLine first asked showrunner Elwood Reid about the cold case midway through Season 3. Reid was cagey then, joking that fans had assumed Mel was a mole or part of something shady — “which is honestly a great f–king idea. I should steal that.” He said the writers were actually looking for a different vibe, someone eager and quirky with hidden pain. He also noted the parallel to Colter’s own history with his father.
The Cold Case That Wouldn’t Die
The show carried over into Season 4 with a question still open: would Mel and Colter finally meet face-to-face? Their introduction was still pending, along with the mystery surrounding Mel’s mother, which remained unresolved at the close of Season 3.
Before the Season 4 premiere airs on Sunday, October 4, at 9:30/8:30c, TVLine caught up with Reid for a second time. This time around, he was far more open about his plans.
“We’re going to go there,” the EP confirmed. “So we’re building that story.”
Reid said the storyline is still being shaped, and he didn’t rule out Jensen Ackles’ schedule will allow Colter’s brother becoming part of it. Building out Mel’s story is one piece of a bigger Season 4 push to give more depth to the people around Colter.
“When you move into later seasons of a show, people view this as a family,” Reid explained. “So you want to unwind more of these characters, personalize a little bit more. Not in a soapy, cheesy way, but in a way that can, I think, serve the kind of stories that ‘Tracker’ does.”
The Russell Angle
Ackles’s return is already confirmed for Episode 5, and the possibility of a Russell connection makes it especially interesting. Reid told TVLine that he hopes to bring Ackles back for an extended run of episodes later in Season 4. However, since we had his ear, the “Vought Rising” star has been cast in a new serial killer drama for MGM+, which could make scheduling even more complicated.
Whether Mel’s mother’s cold case ultimately provides the reason for another Russell return remains to be seen.
What To Watch For
Sunday, October 4, marks the premiere at 9:30/8:30c. Reid has said the narrative will develop gradually across several episodes.
The key questions are:
- Will Mel and Colter finally meet face-to-face?
- Will the show reveal who killed Mel’s mother?
- Will Russell get involved in the case?
The Bottom Line
The writers have been setting up Mel’s tragic past across two seasons, and now it appears Tracker is finally prepared to pay it off.
The mystery has been hanging over the show for two seasons. Mel’s frustration with the systems that failed to deliver answers or justice helped explain her aversion to bureaucracy. Fans have been waiting for the show to answer the obvious question: who killed Mel’s mother?
That Reid confirmed where the story is headed is a weight off the mind. The series has hinted at it for so long that the real answer finally arrived late.
Ackles’ return gives the story a natural hook, and the possibility of Russell getting involved adds another layer on top of that.
Fans will finally receive answers after the premiere airs on Sunday, October 4, at 9:30/8:30c.
The episode will air on Sunday, October 4, at 9:30/8:30c. The premiere is part of a larger set of details about the season. Ackles confirmed he will be back for Episode 5. Russell’s role has yet to be fully decided. And Mel’s mother was killed when Mel was just 16.
