Shubman Gill raises his bat after scoring a century during India's ODI match against West Indies.

Shubman Gill hit 223 not out off 133 balls as India chased down 406 to beat West Indies by eight wickets in their second ODI on Wednesday. The win gives India a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

It was the second successful 400-plus run-chase in ODI history. South Africa’s 438-9 against Australia in 2006 remains the record.

Gill’s Record Chase

Gill’s 223 not out was his best ODI score and a record-high individual tally in an ODI run-chase. It was his 11th ODI hundred, one of five on the day.

India chased down the target in 43.3 overs, reaching 406-2. The win came with 6.3 overs to spare, marking their highest run-chase in ODIs. Before this match, their best chase was 362-1 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.

Gill got to his second 50 off 24 balls. His century came in 62 deliveries overall. His second ODI double hundred came off 117 balls, the fastest in ODIs.

The highest score in a run-chase came when he passed Glenn Maxwell’s 201 against Afghanistan in Mumbai in 2023, and it stands as the third-highest individual score in ODIs.

“It was a hot and humid day,” Gill said. “With 400 on the board, there was pressure at the start and then at the halfway mark. I am very pleased I could stay till the end and finish this innings. I try to break my innings into smaller parts. Once we scored 200-odd before 25 overs, the pressure was on them.”

Rohit Sharma’s Century

Rohit Sharma made 101 as the opening pair put on 255 off 158 balls. That is the second-highest opening stand for India in ODIs. Only Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly’s 258 against Kenya in Paarl in 2001 ranks ahead.

Sharma reached his 35th century off 72 balls before being trapped lbw by Jayden Seales in the 27th over.

After Sharma went, Gill kept up the attack and hit a second ODI double hundred off 117 balls.

West Indies Total

The West Indies were asked to bat first and reached a total of 405-7, which marked the first occasion they had surpassed 400 in an ODI.

Three West Indies batters struck centuries in an ODI innings for the first time. Amir Jangoo top-scored with 114, skipper Shai Hope made 104 and opener John Campbell set the day’s tempo with 101 off 68 balls.

West Indies got off to a fast start, with Campbell hitting nine fours and five sixes. Justin Greaves was left out because of his injury.

The visitors piled up 96-1 during the powerplay, and Campbell’s second ODI hundred came off 65 balls to fuel the run chase. He combined with Hope for 110 off 79 balls, a partnership that helped both batsmen reach their respective milestones. Hope notched his 20th ODI century along the way.

After Jangoo scored a half-century in the opening game, he went on to register a second ODI century in this match, completing it off 70 deliveries. His innings included three sixes and 13 fours, helping West Indies accumulate 76 runs from the final 10 overs.

The five-century milestone came about for the very first time across a single ODI match.

It marked the first time a team with three centuries in ODIs lost, even though it was the 11th such occasion overall.
