Netflix is rolling out a strong slate of originals this October, with two major releases in the first half of the month and three more in the back half. The streamer has a mix of thrillers, dramas, and documentaries, led by stars like Ben Affleck, Kerry Washington, and Chris Evans.
Opening Day
The month opens with two originals aimed at the Netflix Top 10. Tyler Perry’s Doing Life arrives October 2, starring Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves as a single mother and a reformed convict who build a bond through letter-writing while he is incarcerated. The film follows their relationship after his release, as they support each other through difficult circumstances.
Also on October 2 is Schumacher ’94 — The Birth of a Legend, a documentary about German auto racer Michael Schumacher’s 1994 Formula One season, which ended with his first World Drivers’ Championship victory.
Mid-October
October 9 brings Animals, a crime thriller directed by Ben Affleck. He plays Los Angeles mayoral candidate Mark Kimball, whose life unravels when his son is kidnapped. His wife, Abigail, played by Kerry Washington, joins him as the couple scrambles to come up with a ransom payment while running low on funds from his campaigning efforts.
The Back Half
October 16 is the busiest day of the month. Sacrifice, starring Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy, is a Will Arbery-written and Romain Gavras-directed action comedy-drama about a struggling film star named Mike Tyler who attends a lavish billionaire-funded event to campaign for his comeback. Cult leader Joan takes him hostage and offers him as a human sacrifice, forcing him to kill his own ego to survive her followers and the wealthy elite.
The same day, Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald drops. Directed by Judd Apatow, the documentary chronicles the late comedian’s journey from stand-up in Canada to hosting Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update. It celebrates his reputation as a “true ‘comedian’s comedian.'”
The Docs
October 7 brings Who Is Martin Mull?, a Bob Saget-directed documentary about the late entertainer’s career as an actor, comedian, musician, and painter. It features interviews with Steve Martin, Tom Waits, David Alan Grier, and Mull himself.
October 30 closes the month with SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of, a look at the sketch comedy series Second City Television, featuring Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Martin Short, and Joe Flaherty.
The Remaining Titles
One more title, The Storm, arrives in the back half of the month. Directed by Gustaf Skarsgård, it is a Swedish dark comedy drama with a star-studded cast including Salma Hayek, John Malkovich, Charli XCX, Yung Lean, Jade Croot, Miriam Silverman, and Jeremy O. Harris.

Our View
This is a strong month for Netflix originals. The two biggest releases, Animals and Sacrifice, both feature major stars. The documentaries round out the slate with niche appeal, though SCTV is the outlier — a deep dive into a beloved sketch comedy series.
The mix works. You have a crime thriller, a comeback comedy, an emotionally layered drama, a sports doc, and a career retrospective, all dropping across the month.
The month shows how Netflix operates. It leans on star power for its tentpoles, then fills the calendar with smaller docs that reward patient viewers. October 2026 looks like another example of that approach in motion.
The question is whether any of these films will crack the Top 10. Tyler Perry’s Doing Life and Animals are positioned to try.
Either way, there is plenty to watch. The month opens with a comeback story, peaks with a hostage situation, and closes with a tribute to sketch comedy. That is a wide range of content.
