Shopify just let you build a whole online store by talking to a chatbot.
The company unveiled a new site-builder called Canvas Thursday. Instead of picking templates and dragging blocks, merchants talk to Shopify’s AI assistant, Sidekick, and describe what they want. As the chat happens, Canvas renders the actual code behind the store in real time, so you see the finished page before it exists.
It is a bold move, and it lands exactly where the market is heading.
The Chat-First Approach
Canvas works like this:
- A merchant tells Sidekick what they want their store to look like, down to the layout, images, and text.
- Sidekick processes the request and generates the necessary code.
- Canvas shows the result immediately, complete with interactivity and animation, across all screen sizes.
- If something needs fixing, the merchant can either keep chatting or click into the elements directly.
The key detail is that this is not a mockup. According to Shopify, the preview is the real code rendering live. That means you can test clicks, scroll behavior, and animations before the site ever goes live.
How Sidekick Works Now
Sidekick is not new. It has been used for writing code, building apps, customizing themes, and making other edits. But Canvas is the first product that pulls it together into a full site-building experience.
To make this work, Shopify gave Sidekick direct access to the theme’s files and simplified the theme architecture. That makes the store’s structure, logic, and design easier for the AI to understand and change.
The result is a builder that can show the entire store at once, with zoom and pan controls, while updating the site’s actual files.
Who Else Is Doing This
Canvas sits alongside a wave of similar tools from other companies. The comparison below shows how the field breaks down:
| Company | Focus |
|---|---|
| Wix | AI-powered site builder |
| Squarespace | AI-powered site builder |
| Webflow | AI-powered site builder |
| Framer | Vibe-coding platform |
| Lovable | Vibe-coding platform |
| Replit | Vibe-coding platform |
Shopify is not alone here. Several competitors offer AI-powered builders, and Canvas joins them.
What Merchants Get Out Of It
The big win is accessibility. Merchants who cannot afford developers or designers, or who do not want to learn to code, now have a path to a professional-looking store.
The product is still in its early days, so there are areas where it will need to expand and improve. Some deeper customizations may still require human coding, though Shopify has not detailed exactly where the limits sit.
The Trend Toward Conversational Builders
The broader shift is clear. Building a website no longer requires coding it directly. Canvas joins numerous other AI-powered site-building tools from companies like Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer, alongside vibe-coding platforms like Lovable and Replit.
Shopify is betting that the future of e-commerce is a conversation, not a code editor. Whether that bet pays off depends on how well Canvas handles the rough edges that early adopters inevitably find.
The Bottom Line
A merchant can describe a store, watch it take shape, and launch it without ever touching a line of code.
That is a promising step toward greater access for online sellers.
