Two decades after its release, Bong Joon Ho’s monster hit The Host is returning to theaters, and it’s coming with a new 4K restoration. Today, Magnolia Pictures revealed that the remastered version of his 2006 creature feature will debut in North American cinemas on November 20, 2026.

To mark its 20th anniversary, the film is getting a theatrical release from Magnolia. The package brings an exclusive talk with Bong himself, along with a restored print that promises improved visual quality. No additional technical information was included with the announcement.

Bong’s Path From Monster Attack To Subway Horror

Over the past twenty years, Bong Joon Ho has built a career moving between thrillers, comedies and dramas, with his 2019 film Parasite taking home multiple Academy Awards. He first made his name through sci-fi films like The Host, which mix action with pointed social commentary.

This monster movie marked his first attempt at science fiction. The story centers on Gang-du, a clumsy snack-stand vendor, and his troubled family, who get pulled into the middle of an attack by a strange creature on the Han River. After the monster snatches his daughter, the family will not stop until she is saved from the terrifying grasp of a mutated amphibious beast, which turns out to be the consequence of military carelessness.

The screenplay for the film was co-written by Bong, along with Ha Joon-won and Baek Chul-hyun, while he also served as director. The cast features Song Kang-ho as Gang-du, Byun Hee-bong as Heebong, Park Hae-il as Nam-il, Bae Doona as Nam-jo, and Go Ah-sung as Hyun-seo.

The Restoration And What Bong Says About It

The director shared his pleasure over the upcoming release of the 4K remastered version of the film in North American theaters. He maintains that the human feelings stirred by the story retain their power today.

“I’m also very glad that the 4K remastered version of the film will be playing in North American theaters, which will provide higher visual quality,” Bong said. “20 years may have passed, but I believe the human emotions that well up in the film remain as relevant as ever. And I hope the audience feels those emotions as well.”

A creative partnership between two studios helped bring the movie’s special effects to life. Weta Workshop, known for King Kong and The Lord of the Rings, joined forces with The Orphanage, which had worked on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Sin City. The R-rated film has kept its fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is regarded as one of the best monster movies of all time.

The Director’s Next Project

Bong has no intention of resting on his past work. His next major project is Neon, an animated film titled Ally. The story follows a curious pig squid’s journey from the ocean’ as it ascends from the uncharted depths to the surface.

The award-winning filmmaker has been developing the feature since 2019, following the critical and commercial success of Parasite. The star-studded cast includes Bradley Cooper, Ayo Edebiri, Dave Bautista, Finn Wolfhard, and Werner Herzog. Neon‘s first animated feature is currently expected to debut in 2027.

Earlier, Bong hinted at his upcoming horror film, describing it as his “life project.” No further information on its development or a possible release date has been made public. The narrative is set in Seoul, Korea, during an “underground section of the subway.”

Waiting For The Re-Release

Magnolia has shared a video of Bong expressing his delight about the upcoming re-release, which allows audiences to revisit the film’s legacy. The Host will hit theaters on November 20, 2026.

This version of the film gives audiences a way to view it the way Bong originally wanted it presented. His own excitement about the restoration shows he thinks the movie remains compelling.

“I believe the human emotions that well up in the film remain as relevant as ever,” Bong said. That is the promise of the re-release: the same monster, the same family, the same river, and the same feelings, now sharper than they have been in twenty years.

This film’s return to theaters offers a rare chance to view it anew, and it has long stood as a modern sci-fi classic.
