Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti scream obscenities at each other on a stage during a tense scene.

Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti scream obscenities at each other for nearly a minute in The Debut, and the NYFF audience couldn’t help but cheer.

The scene happens about an hour into the film, directed by Jesse Eisenberg, who also wrote it. Moore plays Mona, a meek housewife who auditions for a local production of Nosy Neighbors — a made-up musical about a New York City apartment building. She lands the role of Miss Danielle, the building super, despite being a terrible actress. Giamatti plays Jerry, the director who agrees to cast her only because no one else is available.

Mona’s Rent Problem

Mona doesn’t project. She doesn’t emote. She doesn’t transform into her character. Jerry tries to fix that during rehearsals. One day, he holds Mona back after rehearsal and tells everyone else to leave early — except Mona. He wants her to convince him to pay his rent.

“Why should I pay my rent?” Jerry asks.

“Because the motherfucking rent is motherfucking due!” Mona screams.

The exchange builds slowly. Mona starts timidly, asking for the rent because she needs money for her husband, for herself, to eat. Jerry keeps pressing why. Mona keeps answering because. Their voices climb until they’re screaming at full volume, spit flying.

“Because the motherfucking rent is motherfucking due!”

Jerry finally hands over his rent check in silence. The audience applauded.

The Perfect Climax

The scene is a perfect build. Mona is mortified in front of the whole cast. Jerry is frustrated in every word. The dialogue is simple — why, why, why — but the delivery carries everything. Moore and Giamatti are both Oscar winners and nominees, and they let loose together.

The NYFF press audience reacted spontaneously. Overworked and underpaid critics, according to the report, don’t usually break into applause mid-movie. But this scene earned it.

Mona Wins

Mona’s rant is the victory. She screams that she can’t go back to living on the street. She screams that she’ll live under a bridge, eating disease-ridden rats. She screams that Jerry is a pathetic egomaniac and she’ll gut him if he doesn’t cough up that check.

The line about the rent is the payoff. It’s a perfect, cathartic moment. Mona got Jerry to pay. What else is there to do but clap?

What We Make of It

The scene works because it’s a character beat dressed as a shouting match. Mona is not respected by anyone — her husband, her kids, even the shopper who cuts her in the grocery line. The audition gives her a chance to matter. When Jerry pushes her, she finds a voice.

Moore sells it. Giamatti matches her. The scene is a reminder that great acting isn’t about subtlety alone — it’s about commitment. Both performers are fully committed to the moment.

The NYFF audience response matters because it’s honest. Spontaneous applause is rare. This scene earned it.

The Debut opens in U.S. theaters on December 11, 2026.
