Peacock has ordered a new Fast & Furious TV series, and the streamer is aiming to put it on screen by 2028. The news comes from NBCUniversal, which first revealed the project was in development back in May during its upfront presentation. Vin Diesel confirmed the move at that event, and now the studio has confirmed the show is moving forward.

Diesel’s Long Wait

Diesel has been chasing a TV spinoff for years. He spoke about it at the upfront in May, saying fans had been asking for more stories beyond the movies. “They wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories,” he said. “And for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space that Fallon has mastered.”

He added that the timing finally aligned when Donna Langley took over as overseer of the franchise. “That’s when I knew that the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, what makes us all feel like family would be protected in the TV space,” he said. “The news that I have here today is that Peacock is launching four shows from the Fast and Furious universe.”

The streamer is looking to premiere the series by 2028, a date that lines up with the next film installment, Fast Forever, which is scheduled for March 17, 2028.

The Creative Team Behind It

The showrunners are Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman, who previously worked together on Shades of Blue and 911: Lone Star. They will also write the pilot and serve as executive producers alongside Diesel. One Race’s Sam Vincent and Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty are attached as EPs, along with Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan Productions’ Chris Morgan.

Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio behind the series.

The Road to 2028

Peacock’s plan is ambitious. The streamer wants the TV series to debut in the same window as the next film, which suggests the two projects may be coordinated. Whether the show arrives on schedule is another matter. The 2028 premiere date is a goal, not a guarantee. Streaming platforms often announce dates early in development, and delays happen frequently.

What the Franchise Has Built

The Fast & Furious franchise is massive. The source material offers a quick explainer from NBCU, which notes the franchise launched 25 years ago with the release of The Fast and the Furious on June 22, 2001. That film introduced Dominic Toretto, Brian O’Conner, Mia and Letty.

The franchise has also produced a successful animated series. Netflix aired Fast & Furious Spy Racers for six seasons between 2019 and 2021.

Diesel’s Role

Diesel’s involvement as an executive producer means the core identity of the franchise is being preserved. He has made it clear that the integrity of the characters is paramount.
