Johnny Warren has a problem. He wants a job in family law, but the firms he interviews with keep rejecting him. They’re not impressed by his slick confidence or his time in New York. His references, it turns out, paint a picture far less successful than the one he’s been selling.
So Johnny does what any desperate lawyer would do: he becomes a spy. In HBO and Sky’s legal drama War, the first episode reveals that Johnny’s hiring at Taylor & Byrne wasn’t based on merit. It was orchestrated by Morgan Henderson’s law firm, Cathcarts & Sons, which offered him a job not to work for them directly, but to be a mole inside Taylor & Byrne’s team.
The Spy Inside the Firm
Johnny moves back to London after working at a Manhattan law firm. He’s hunting a job in family law, and he interviews at several firms that aren’t buying his pitch. Then Cathcarts & Sons steps in. Knowing Johnny would be interviewing with Taylor & Byrne, they offer him a position — not to work for them, but to gather information on Taylor & Byrne’s side.
To seal the deal, Cathcarts’ partner St. John Smallwood (Pip Torrens) called a friend at Johnny’s old law firm and asked them to give Taylor & Byrne a glowing recommendation. That reference, combined with Johnny’s admission that he was entertaining an offer from Cathcarts, was all law partners Nicholas Taylor (James McArdle) and Serena Byrne (Phoebe Fox) needed to bring him onboard.
Johnny now works for Taylor & Byrne while reporting to Cathcarts. The arrangement is a classic double agent move: he represents Carla Duval (Sienna Miller) in her divorce from Morgan Henderson (Dominic West) while feeding information to the other side.
Johnny’s Desperate Move
Johnny’s decision to take the job is not a master plan. It’s a panicked response to rejection. As Archie Renaux, who plays Johnny, explained to Mashable, desperation is the more straightforward answer.
“He’s from a sort of background of just hustling and fighting by any means possible,” Renaux said. “‘I’m going to achieve my goals, and if it’s going to have to be this way, so be it.’ He’s moving so fast, and things happen so quickly that he hasn’t really got time to think.”
Johnny spent the whole episode being rejected. Then he was made a laughingstock by his girlfriend Bella’s (Honor Swinton Byrne) posh friends. The combination pushed him to accept the job at Taylor & Byrne, even though he knows it comes with serious risks.
What Happens If Johnny’s Secret Gets Out
Being a mole is dangerous. If Johnny’s secret gets out, he could be blackballed from the profession he claims to love. The stakes are high for both Johnny and the firm that hired him.
For Taylor & Byrne, having a spy on their team is a vulnerability. For Johnny, the risk is personal. Blackballing from the profession would end his career before it ever really started.
The Lawyers Behind the Story
War isn’t just a drama. The creative team and cast consulted with lawyers to understand the petty infighting that goes on between law firms. That research shaped the show’s depiction of the legal world.
The idea of Johnny’s mole arc, however, didn’t come from real-life experience. Series creator George Kay told Mashable that the idea has never happened in real life, but it’s the kind of thing lawyers might imagine.
“It’s the sort of idea lawyers have,” Kay said. “It’s where their mind would go, which is the real part of it.”
Kay framed the arc as a product of legal imagination rather than documented practice. The show draws on what lawyers might think, not what they actually do.
The Blowback Cathcarts Could Face
Cathcarts & Sons structured the operation carefully. If anyone discovers the ruse, they have a fallback position. Kay explains why the answer to Morgan’s question — “Are you out of your mind?” — might be yes.
“If they get found out, they get struck off, basically, from the legal world,” Kay said. “They’ve structured it in such a way that if they get discovered, they can say, ‘Discovered about what? We know nothing about this guy.’ There’s little defense mechanisms in there.”
The defense mechanism is denial. If the scheme is exposed, Cathcarts can claim ignorance. They’ll say they knew nothing about Johnny’s background or his role. The structure protects them from the fallout, even if it doesn’t protect Johnny.
The Risks of Being Found Out
The risks for Johnny are significant. Blackballing from the profession would end his career before it ever really started. The arrangement could come crashing down at any moment.
For Taylor & Byrne, having a spy on their team is a vulnerability. The firm took a chance on Johnny, and now it’s carrying the weight of his secret.
What Comes Next
New episodes of War premiere Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max. The show continues to unfold, and the question of what happens to Johnny hangs over the season.
The show’s creators have built a world where everyone is watching everyone else. Johnny’s decision to become a spy is a bold move, but it’s also a fragile one. The show has set up the tension, and the audience is waiting to see how it pays off.
The show has created a situation with multiple threads running through it:
- Johnny’s desperation drives his decision to become a spy.
- Taylor & Byrne takes a risk by hiring someone they don’t fully trust.
- Cathcarts structures its operation with fallback positions.
- Everyone watches everyone else in a world of petty infighting.
Each thread feeds into the next, building toward a payoff that hasn’t arrived yet.
