This comeback year for Hilary Duff has gotten a bit more chaotic, and this time a certain mischievous feline is behind it.
Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s upcoming theatrical adaptation of The Cat in the Hat now has its soundtrack anchored: the pop star has released “CATastrophe,” an original song written for the film. The track came out Friday (Oct. 2) alongside a music video that sends Duff through a series of colorful, oversized worlds inspired by the whimsical visual language of Dr. Seuss.
Matthew Koma and Brian Phillips produced the track, which Duff co-wrote with her husband and frequent collaborator Matthew Koma, along with Madison Love. Instead of merely acting as a light-hearted nod to the film, “CATastrophe” delves into a rather common concept: how life can shift entirely without warning, before someone has had time to prepare for it.
Duff Explains Why She Said Yes
Billboard was told by Duff that the Dr. Seuss books were always present at her childhood home, which is why she didn’t hesitate when offered the chance to take part in the film. She also said the track deals with the sensation of having your whole life turned upside down without you having any control over it — a concept she wanted to match with a bright, radio-friendly pop song; a fitting contrast.
Duff’s return to music has been strong, with Luck… Or Something marking her first full-length record in more than a decade. It came out earlier this year and has since been met with significant attention. The 11-track album reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, which makes it her sixth top 10 album on that chart and her highest position there since 2007.
Following a lengthy absence from extensive touring, Duff has returned to the road. This year, she launched the Lucky Me tour, which brings her Y2K-era hits and newer songs to audiences across the globe. The tour has been extended through 2027, and Duff will receive Billboard’s Outstanding Pop Tour of the Year award at the 2026 Billboard Live Music Summit in November.
The comeback has moved to a universe full of talking animals, impossible proportions and a very tall red-and-white hat. Duff is now taking it there.
The Cat in the Hat Cast and Release Dates
Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s first full-length theatrical feature arrives in theaters and IMAX on Nov. 6, with the film’s soundtrack, The Cat in the Hat (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), arriving roughly a week earlier on Oct. 30. Bill Hader voices the titular Seussian troublemaker, who tries to help siblings Gabby and Sebastian get used to living in a new town. Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, Xochitl Gomez, Giancarlo Esposito and America Ferrera round out the voice cast.

What We Make of CATastrophe
“CATastrophe” is a clever title for a song about losing control. Duff has built a career on reinvention, and this track pairs that theme with the anarchic spirit of a talking cat who upends everything he touches. The video’s oversized worlds mirror the song’s central idea: change comes fast, and it rarely asks permission.
The heart of the song is its relatable hook: the feeling of having your world rearranged without a say. That pivot away from a simple marketing tie-in makes the track feel personal instead of promotional. The fact that Duff wanted to pair that heavy idea with an upbeat, car-ready pop song is precisely the kind of contrast that defines her current run.
The record’s peak and the run of shows prove the size of her return to prominence. She has reached her highest spot on the Billboard 200 since 2007, and the tour runs through 2027. Both mark real strength rather than mere fond memory for her career. The song sits firmly inside that very wave of success.
The film hits theaters on Nov. 6, while the soundtrack arrives about a week sooner. The track will be available to listeners ahead of the movie’s release, giving the comeback artist a chance to build momentum across both audio and visual platforms at once.
A solid cast backs up this film, with Hader as Cat fitting the role of someone who stirs things up. The supporting voice cast rounds out the ensemble in this order:
- Matt Berry
- Quinta Brunson
- Xochitl Gomez
- Giancarlo Esposito
- America Ferrera
The voice work alone suggests an ensemble capable of handling the sheer oddity of a talking feline.
Duff has a pleasant moment here, with a song that keeps things light and a video that offers a real visual pleasure.
