Sean Parker Is Rebuilding Stability AI Around Music

Sean Parker is rebuilding Stability AI around music, licensing Sony, Warner, and Universal catalogs to train its models.

Sean Parker is rebuilding Stability AI around music, and he is doing it the old-fashioned way: by asking for permission first. Parker, the Napster co-founder, tells The Information that he is playing by the rules this time. Asking for forgiveness rather than permission did not work out well last time around, he readily concedes.

The pivot comes after two years of upheaval at the image-generator startup. Parker joined an $80 million rescue of the company, and he brought along Prem Akkaraju, his longtime friend, who became CEO. Akkaraju took over as leader when founder Emad Mostaque stepped down. Now the wraps are coming off. Parker says the big idea is to turn Stability into the go-to AI toolmaker for music professionals.

The Rescue Deal

The funding round includes a catalog licensing deal. Sony, Warner, and Universal each licensed their catalogs for training as part of the arrangement. That gives Stability a trove of musical data to build its models on.

The funding announcement in late August marked the moment the company went public with its new direction. The $80 million rescue deal came first, and then the $76 million funding round followed.

Models and Software

Since the funding announcement, Stability has released three new audio models. It has also launched AI music-editing software. The AI can generate whole instrumental tracks from text prompts, or it can produce short snippets based on what a user asks for.

Parker says an upcoming update will let users hum a melody or beatbox a drum pattern to steer the AI. The hands-free approach could make the software more accessible to musicians who do not want to type commands.

The Catalog Arrangement

The involvement of the three major labels suggests they see value in the technology. The catalog licenses give the company access to some of the largest music collections in the world.

That combination could make Stability a standard tool for anyone working with audio. The funding round positions Stability as a serious player in the music-tech space.
