Magic: The Gathering’s Reality Fracture storyline has concluded with a two-episode finale in which a major planeswalker dies and the Echoverse itself is destroyed. Jace Dies in the Theorist’s Sanctum

Episode 9 opens as the Echoverse begins spreading across the Multiverse. Following quick looks at various planes, the narrative settles back on Strixhaven-Hexhaven, where Tam feels the fear spreading among Strixhaven’s students. She seeks out Kirol, a friend she wronged under Jace’s direction; Kirol admits lingering resentment but also affection, and urges Tam to use her mind to find a way to stop the overlay.

In the final of Jace’s memory rooms, built to resemble Ravnica’s Implicit Maze, Vraska is reunited with Chandra, who cautions that copies of themselves guard the only exit. Echo-Vraska commands an enormous dragon statue, but with Chandra’s aid, Vraska turns her own copy to stone. Ajani, Chandra, and Garruk overcome their own doubles by swapping opponents. Vraska takes Echo-Vraska’s dress for herself, and the group of four planeswalkers moves on toward the Theorist’s sanctum.

The Theorist, unraveling further, keeps pushing the overlay onward. Liliana tries to stop him, but he resists her, still haunted by her betrayal in the War of the Spark and the manipulative nature of their past relationship. Liliana unleashes the lich-Professor Opal against him, and in response the Theorist strikes back using her most painful memories.

Then the real Vraska steps in and drives a blade through the Theorist’s heart. His scattered aberrations rush back into him, halting his control over the overlay and leaving him helpless. The Soldier strips him of the ability to breathe, and the fragments of Jace merge back into a single being — whole at last, but dying.

With his final moments, Jace sends telepathic farewells to the planeswalkers nearby, reconciling with Liliana. To Vraska, he offers his last words: “Thank you, Captain.”

Tam Calls on Emrakul

Once Jace dies, a sphere of blue light emerges from his body and shoots out through a window. Back on Strixhaven-Hexhaven, Tam spots it rushing straight at her. Her attempts to block it, evade it, and flee all fail, and it slams into her, flooding her with magical force.

Recalling that she is meant to seek assistance, Tam contacts a being she encountered on Innistrad — the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. She asks Emrakul to consume the Echoverse, and Emrakul agrees.

Returning to her own body, Tam senses herself becoming more fully a person, with her own desires and identity. She watches Emrakul swallow the Echoverse on Hexhaven, then extends her awareness to witness the same thing occurring across other planes.

Tam’s Friends and the Folioplex

At the Folioplex, Tam reunites with the Strixhaven friends she once betrayed. Abigale and Sanar pull her into a hug, while Lluwen keeps her distance. Kirol won’t embrace her but insists on a proper introduction, and Tam presents herself simply as Tam — nothing more, nothing less. She gives her friends instructions for reaching safety, then departs to look after other Strixhaven students.

Tam witnesses Hexhaven’s destruction up close, thanks Emrakul, and then receives one final psychic message from Jace: he created her as a “fail-safe,” she now carries his spark, and he asks that she work to improve the Multiverse.

Having finally come to understand who she is, Tam wishes herself a happy birthday and planeswalks for the very first time, arriving safely back at Strixhaven.

Old Scores and a Funeral

In the Theorist’s now-abandoned sanctum, the duplicate planeswalkers reappear to torment their originals. Garruk seizes the chance to settle an old grudge with Liliana, who offers her life in exchange for his revenge while Ajani and Chandra flee the scene.

Garruk questions Liliana about Will and Rowan Kenrith before planeswalking off. Liliana then finds Vraska still cradling Jace’s body and urges her to keep living. The two women carry Jace’s remains back into the Multiverse together.

Afterward, on Vryn, Jace’s home plane, Vraska remains close to his mother, Ranna, and her adopted child, Loot. Jace received a quiet burial, his body laid to rest at the bottom of a lake.

One day, Vraska answers the door to find Tam standing there — bearing an unsettling resemblance to both Jace and Vraska. Caught off guard, Vraska doesn’t know how to react. Tam explains that she, too, is grieving, and that she wants Vraska’s support when she’s ready for it. Startled, Ranna drops the teacups she’s holding.

Calmly and without hesitation, Tam tells Vraska that she’s come “to help make things better.”

The Finale’s Structure

Several threads remain unresolved. Tam now carries a spark and a purpose. Vraska has gained a new family connection who resembles her late partner. Jace is gone, and so is the Echoverse.
