Apple has revealed the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone and the biggest change to the smartphone line since the original model launched. The device opens from a 5.4-inch outer display into a 7.6-inch inner screen, and Apple says it becomes the thinnest iPhone ever when unfolded.
The Duo costs $1,999 and arrives in star white and night sky. Pre-orders begin October 16, with release on October 23.
The Two Displays
The inner 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR screen is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display. A nano-texture finish reduces glare and makes the crease less visible, according to Apple.
The outer 5.4-inch display provides 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. Both screens support ProMotion, Always On, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
Cameras and Security
Apple has hidden a FaceTime camera underneath the inner display. Touch ID now sits in the side button, replacing Face ID. Apple Pencil support arrives later in 2026.
The phone uses Grade 5 titanium and a hinge built from more than 100 components. It carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
iOS 27 Redesign
Apple has rebuilt iOS 27 to adapt as the Duo is folded, rotated, or positioned. Split View brings two apps side by side to an iPhone for the first time. Users can save app pairs, open two windows from one app, and run Siri AI alongside another app.
Netflix, Zoom, and Slack are already being adapted for the larger display.
StandBy now works when the Duo is not charging. Placed partially folded on a surface, it acts as a clock, photo frame, or widget hub.
New Camera Tricks
The folding design adds fresh camera features. Users can take selfies with the rear cameras while the outer display acts as a preview. Duo Preview lets the person being photographed see the shot before it is taken.
The A20 Pro Chip
The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s A20 Pro chip, the same processor found in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Apple says the phone delivers up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, helped by a custom vapor chamber for heat management.
Battery and Charging
There is a battery on each side of the foldable. Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen, 44 hours on the outer display, and 24 hours using both screens equally.
The Duo reaches 50% charge in about 20 minutes wired or 30 minutes wirelessly.
Camera Specs
The main camera is a 48MP Fusion Main with 2x optical-quality zoom, joined by a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. It records 4K video at 120fps.
