Beatles ’65 is a snapshot of a band moving faster than its own fans could keep up. Released in 1964, it is not a new studio album but the American version of Beatles for Sale, pared down and reshuffled for the U.S. market. It is also the sound of the Beatles pivoting from pure pop to something rougher, sadder, and more self-aware. The record tries to prove they were more than the moptops who screamed through their earlier hits. It succeeds, mostly.
No Reply and the Opening Run
The album opens with “No Reply,” a song about a phone that rings unanswered and a narrator who knows he has been replaced. It is the most mature thing the Beatles had written to that point, with a vocal that turns from plea to threat in the space of a verse. “I’m a Loser” follows, and the title is not a joke. The lyric is genuine self-mockery, a confession dressed as a pop song.
“Baby’s in Black” slows things down, a waltz about a woman mourning someone else. It is moody and a little strange, and it works. Then comes “Rock and Roll Music,” played fast and loose. It is the first cover on the record, and it is pure energy, a reminder that these four lads were first and foremost a live band. “I’ll Follow the Sun” closes the opening stretch, a gentle acoustic number that suggests the band could do quiet melancholy just as well as loud rock.
Mr. Moonlight and the Covers
The middle of the record is where it dips. “Mr. Moonlight” is the weakest track here. The organ intro is cheesy, and the performance never quite catches fire. “Honey Don’t” is better, a rockabilly number that is loose and fun, but it is also filler, the kind of track that padded out albums in 1964.
“I’ll Be Back” is the standout of this section. It has a tricky, unresolved chord progression, and it sounds like a band experimenting with form while pretending not to. It closes the side with a sense of craft that the covers lack.
I Feel Fine and the Finish
“She’s a Woman” is a bluesy, swaggering track that points toward the harder rock the band would explore later. Then comes “I Feel Fine,” the lead single, and it is the best thing here. The feedback that opens the song was a studio accident turned into a hook, and it changed what a pop record could do in its first three seconds.
“Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby” closes the album. It is a good-time closer, but it is not a strong one. The record ends on a shrug rather than a statement.
The Verdict
Beatles ’65 is a transitional record. It has three or four songs that stand with the best of the band’s early work, and it has a handful of covers that exist only to fill time. The original songs are the reason to own it. The covers are the reason it is not a masterpiece.
The record is 26 minutes long, which means it is over before you have settled into it. That brevity works in its favor. There is no room for a bad stretch to wear out its welcome. It is a minor work from a major band, and it is worth your time.
