Black Clover ran for 170 episodes across one season, from October 2017 to March 2021, on TV Tokyo and its TXN affiliates. That is a long time to spend with a boy who cannot use magic. The show made it work.

Asta and Yuno, Two Orphans, One Goal

The premise is simple. Asta and Yuno are orphans raised in a rural village. Both want to become the Wizard King, the authority figure second only to the king of Clover Kingdom. Yuno is a prodigy with immense magical power and a talent for wind magic. Asta was born without mana, so he has no way to use magic at all.

The source of the show’s pull is right there. In a world where magic is everything, the hero has none. Asta trains his body instead. He gets a five-leaf grimoire, an artifact that holds mysterious elf swords and a bodiless member of the Devil race who uses rare anti-magic. Yuno, meanwhile, receives the legendary four-leaf grimoire, the rare book given only to the most immense mages.

The Black Bulls and the Golden Dawn

The two join Magic Knight squads. Asta lands with the Black Bulls under Yami Sukehiro, alongside Noelle Silva. Yuno joins the Golden Dawn. From there the show builds out. The Magic Knights face the Eye of the Midnight Sun, an extremist group whose leadership is manipulated by a Devil avenging an injustice done to the Elves by the Clover Kingdom at its founding. Later they face the Dark Triad of the Spade Kingdom, then the Dark Triad’s eldest sibling, Lucius Zogratis, who wants to create his own perfect world.

Pierrot produced the series, based on Yūki Tabata’s manga. The cast includes Gakuto Kajiwara as Asta, Nobunaga Shimazaki as Yuno, Kana Yuuki as Noelle Silva, and Junichi Suwabe as Yami Sukehiro. Genki Muro voices Magna Swing, Ayumu Murase voices Luck Voltia, and Jun Fukuyama voices Finral Roulacase.

What the Long Run Buys

A 170-episode run is a gamble. It lets a show build a full world, and Black Clover uses the room. The Eye of the Midnight Sun arc gives the Knights a real enemy with a real grievance. The Spade Kingdom arc raises the stakes again. Asta and Yuno learn how Devils have shaped their lives. The show keeps adding, and most of it lands.

The cost is pace. A series this long will test any viewer’s patience, and the middle stretches do not always earn their length. That is the trade-off built into the format, not a flaw unique to this one.

Asta and Yuno are two orphans who want the same thing: to become the Wizard King.

That line is the whole engine. The rivalry is friendly, and the show never turns it into something mean. It is the rare competition where both sides want the other to succeed.

A World Where Magic Is Everything

The magic system carries the weight. Grimoires are not just props. They mark who you are. Yuno’s four-leaf book puts him in rare company. Asta’s five-leaf book is a mystery, and the show treats it that way. The anti-magic in it is the answer to a world that runs on mana, and the show knows it.

The Devil inside Asta’s grimoire is not a gimmick. It ties into the Elves’ history and the Clover Kingdom’s founding. The show connects its smallest detail to its largest one. That is harder than it looks, and Black Clover does it across years of episodes.

The Verdict on Black Clover

Black Clover earns its place. It takes a familiar shonen setup and gives it a hero with a genuine disadvantage. Asta cannot fall back on magic. He has to be strong the other way, and the show commits to that. The Magic Knight squads give the story a structure, and the Black Bulls give it a home.

The Eye of the Midnight Sun and the Dark Triad arcs show a series willing to escalate. Lucius Zogratis, the final threat, wants to build his own perfect world. That is a fitting end for a show about two boys who want to build their own futures.

The flaws are real. The episode count is punishing. Some arcs run longer than they need to. But the core holds. Asta and Yuno start in the same orphanage and end as the two poles of the story. The show never loses sight of that.

A second season is set to premiere in October 2026. An anime film, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, premiered in Japanese theaters and on Netflix internationally in June 2023. The franchise is still moving.

Black Clover is not the tightest shonen series ever made. It is one of the most committed. It gives its hero no magic and makes you believe he can still reach the top. That is the trick, and it works.
