BlizzCon 2026 returned to Anaheim, California, on September 12-13 with major announcements across Blizzard Entertainment’s key franchises. The convention drew more than 1.76 million peak viewers, according to live coverage figures, as Blizzard revealed Diablo V, a new open-world StarCraft shooter, World of Warcraft: Forever, and several other projects and updates.

The Numbers Behind BlizzCon 2026

The live broadcast drew a Peak Viewership figure exceeding 1.76 million, while more than 1,400 distinct channels carried coverage of BlizzCon 2026, accumulating over 8.8 million Hours Watched. Among those channels were Blizzard’s own Twitch and YouTube feeds, along with genre-focused streams such as Warcraft on Twitch and World of Warcraft on YouTube.

Community casters added to the mix. American streamer Zack “zackrawrr” Hoyt dedicated almost 12 hours of airtime to BlizzCon 2026 and reached 144,000 Peak Viewers, making it his most popular broadcast of 2026. Thomas “sodapoppin” Morris IV, Adrien “ZeratoR” Nougaret, and Joaquín “elxokas” Domínguez also covered the event.

Key Announcements From BlizzCon 2026

Blizzard’s Diablo V arrives in spring 2029, set in a Sanctuary that has already fallen to Diablo. An animated Diablo series is also coming to Netflix. Diablo IV receives the Season of Hell’s Legacy update on September 15, along with its Nintendo Switch 2 launch. That update returns the Prime Evils and Deckard Cain, and the Amazon class joins the game during the first half of 2027.

Blizzard has revealed an open-world shooter set in the Koprulu Sector, tied to the StarCraft universe. The announcement came with a cinematic trailer showing the first look at the game, which is expected to launch in spring 2030.

A fresh permanent World of Warcraft experience sits beside Modern and Classic, and it draws on an overhauled version of the original Azeroth. That experience brings three new zones, well over 1,000 quests, nine dungeons, two raids, and a new playable Skyborne race. The beta starts on September 17, with the full release following on November 4, 2026. Blizzard also showed off Eclipse, the next big update for World of Warcraft: Midnight, along with the first teaser for The Last Titan, the closing chapter of the Worldsoul Saga.

A number of significant announcements came with Overwatch 2, among them Doctrine, a Support character whose design draws on vampire imagery, who is set to join Season 5 along with updated versions of Sombra and Roadhog and the new Watchpoint: Grimsvötn map. The event also marked the return of the franchise’s World Cup after a three-year absence.

Both Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm have received updates. The Reign of the Black Empire expansion is set to launch on October 20, with the Monk class arriving in March 2027. For Heroes of the Storm, the first new hero in six years is coming: Xal’atath has entered the PTR on September 14 and is scheduled to join the full game on September 28.

Esports Competitions at BlizzCon 2026

Twitch viewership for both World of Warcraft and Overwatch grew thanks to two major events held during the same period. Blizzard’s World of Warcraft ran the MDI Midnight — Season 1: Global Finals, and its other game, Overwatch, hosted its first World Cup in three years.

How BlizzCon 2026 Compared to September’s Broadcasts

BlizzCon 2026 joined a crowded September calendar of major gaming showcases. Its Peak Viewers total trailed the month’s leading presentations, but the event still generated one of the strongest audiences among major gaming broadcasts held so far in September.

Game Announcement Type Release Window
Diablo V New game Spring 2029
StarCraft shooter New game Spring 2030
World of Warcraft: Forever New experience Beta: September 17, Full: November 4, 2026
Overwatch 2 World Cup First in three years
Hearthstone Expansion October 20
Heroes of the Storm New hero PTR: September 14, Full: September 28

What We Make of It

The success of BlizzCon 2026 came from delivering real news across multiple franchises. The high peak viewership numbers show how much people cared about those announcements, while the ongoing growth on Twitch for both World of Warcraft and Overwatch proves the effect kept going long after the convention floor.

Blizzard’s current task is getting these games out on time. StarCraft, Diablo V, and World of Warcraft: Forever all sit behind specific release dates, and the company has to hit them. The next few years will show whether the buzz around the announcements was justified.

The numbers behind BlizzCon 2026 are striking. They add up to a benchmark that few conventions can match.

  • Peak Viewers: 1.76 million
  • Hours Watched: 8.8 million
  • Unique channels: 1,400+
  • World of Warcraft: Forever launch: November 4, 2026
  • Diablo V launch: Spring 2029
  • StarCraft shooter launch: Spring 2030

Blizzard has shown it can still gather an audience through new projects at its convention. The real test will be whether the actual games can live up to the promise of those announcements.
