Starz’s Outlander prequel Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 premiered with a single goal: break both couples. The season opener, “Remembrance Day,” rips Henry and Julia apart while Brian and Ellen face the Jacobite rebellion head-on.

Henry’s Descent Into Madness

Henry went through the stones without his wife and infant son and wound up in an Inverness psychiatric hospital in 1924. He’s agitated, devastated, and restrained in a straitjacket. A doctor believes he’s escaped horrors from World War I by inventing an elaborate fantasy about the 1700s. He administers electroconvulsive therapy, which only addsles Henry and makes him forget key details, including the existence of his daughter Claire.

The Reverend Wakefield visits and offers solace, but it’s Mrs. Graham who notices the signs. She’s a tea-leaf reader and faerie lover, and she perks up at the mention of another time. By the end of the hour, she brings Henry biscuits. Fiona is convinced he’s telling the truth and says, “I believe you came through time.”

Julia’s Escape Story

How did only one-third of the Beauchamps manage to go through the stones? A flashback shows the passage didn’t work when all three tried. Arch Bug and his men dragged Henry back to the Grants’, leading to a fight where Henry killed one of the men and was wounded. He leaned against the stone, and a faint buzzing sound marked his departure.

Julia is now confused, scared, and sad, plus she needs a cover story. Arch helps by calling Henry bonkers, so she goes along with the kidnapping narrative. She settles a drunken Simon, reminding him he has to prepare for war.

Davina finds her sobbing and learns the truth. Julia admits she and Henry are from another time, that they came through the stones by accident, and that they’ve been trying to get back to their daughter Claire. Davina’s response is immediate panic, closing her eyes so Julia can’t take her soul. The compliment “There’s something rare and remarkable about you” lands as a warning, not a compliment.

Brian’s Farewell

Brian and Ellen are still in their Bothy Bubble of Lurve. Clan crosses are still burning, so Brian has to head home to join the Fraser men preparing for the Jacobite rebellion. They fantasize about a quiet family life after he comes home. His promise to give her “a piece of me to carry” is 18th-century code for bedroom time.

They have it, and then they canoodle. Murtagh rushes in to announce MacKenzie men are sniffing about. Ellen quickly decides that she’ll give herself up to them, because her brothers will take her back, but they’ll kill Brian and Murtagh if they see them. Brian doesn’t like this plan, but Murtagh agrees.

Julia’s Cover Story

Julia has to sell the kidnapping story to the Grants. Arch Bug’s call of Henry being bonkers does the trick. She reminds Simon he has to prepare for war. Davina’s reaction to learning the truth about Julia and Henry is immediate panic, closing her eyes so Julia can’t take her soul.

What It Means For The Season

The premiere sets up a long road ahead. Henry is trapped in a mental hospital, Julia is scrambling for cover, and Brian is marching toward a war that could kill him. The show is wasting no time in finding heartbreaking new challenges.

The recap’s tone is grim and melancholic throughout. It notes that Davina’s compliment about Julia being rare and remarkable is meant as a warning about faeries, and that Brian’s promise to give Ellen a piece of him to carry is decoded as bedroom talk. The writer clearly enjoys the show’s ridiculous romantic tropes.
