Bungie pushes back Marathon's Symbiosis update to December 8, scraps seasons, and delays permanent PvE mode amid layoffs.

Bungie has pushed back the biggest update for its sci-fi shooter Marathon until December, and in doing so has scrapped its entire seasonal schedule. The studio announced today that the update, now called Symbiosis, will arrive on 8 December instead of 22 September as originally planned.

“We previously shared plans for Marathon’s next major update to launch on September 22. We know many players were looking forward to it, and we appreciate your patience. We are adjusting our plans to ensure the update meets your expectations,” Bungie wrote in a recent blog post. “The content originally planned for September will now arrive as part of our Symbiosis update on December 8.”

What Gets Pushed to December

Symbiosis promises a new Runner shell, a permanent PvE mode, and a social space where players can try out weapons together. There is also a refreshed Perimeter zone, an experimental team deathmatch mode, and improvements to the onboarding experience for newcomers.

Before that, a smaller update lands on 6 October. It resets the game’s progression and economy, adds a new Rewards Pass, and brings back Vault Breaker, a PvE mode that briefly appeared a few months ago. That mode returns for a limited time.

The End of Seasons

Bungie is done with seasons entirely. The studio explained why in the same post:

“We’re also moving away from a strict seasonal schedule. Instead of tying major updates to fixed seasonal deadlines, we’re giving the team more flexibility to build, test, and improve features before they are released.”

“Since launch, you’ve told us Marathon needs more depth, more variety, stronger progression, and better reasons to keep playing over the long term. We agree. Addressing that feedback requires us to change both what we’re building and how we deliver it,” the studio continued.

The Layoff Context

The studio has had a rough stretch since Marathon launched earlier this year. Bungie recently cut at least 290 jobs, and the game has struggled to hold on to existing players while drawing new ones.

Dates Worth Tracking

Date Event
22 September Original planned update date
6 October Smaller update with Rewards Pass and Vault Breaker
8 December Symbiosis update

What Changed

Update Original plan New plan
Next major update 22 September 8 December
Seasonal schedule Fixed deadlines Scrapped entirely

Reading Between the Lines

The move away from seasons is a frank admission that the studio’s previous cadence was not working. Bungie is giving its team more time to build and test features before release.

That is the honest version of the story.

The Symbiosis Test

The Symbiosis update carries a lot of weight. It includes the permanent PvE mode that fans have waited for, plus a refreshed Perimeter zone and the experimental team deathmatch mode.

Whether the update turns things around for Marathon depends on whether it delivers on those promises. Bungie has set a deadline and scrapped its old calendar. Now it has to make the deadline count.

The studio is giving its team more room to work. Whether that approach pays off will be clear when Symbiosis finally arrives in December.
