Chromatica I and Alice
The album opens on Chromatica I, a short cue that leads straight into Alice, a forceful opening statement built on a strange, wandering hook.
Stupid Love and Rain on Me
Stupid Love follows, all chorus and no delay. Rain on Me is the strongest track on the record, a soaring, tearful club song built for two voices. Free Woman closes this stretch with a plain, forceful statement of independence.
Fun Tonight through Plastic Doll
Fun Tonight and 911 mark a turn toward pain, the second of these using a plain, sharp image of taking something to get through the day. Plastic Doll pushes back against being shaped by other people, its verses sharper than its chorus.
Sour Candy and Enigma
Sour Candy is pure sugar with a hard shell, built for two voices trading lines. Enigma and Replay run cooler, well made but less memorable. Chromatica III splits the middle of the record, coming after Replay and before Sine From Above.
Sine From Above through Babylon
Sine From Above is the album’s biggest swing, part choir, part dance floor. 1000 Doves is quieter, a plain plea for peace after noise. Babylon closes the record on high drama, a fitting end to the main run.
