Colton Ryan has a dark prediction for his own character, and it involves death, the feds, and a whole lot of taekwondo. In an interview with TV Insider, the Chad Powers star broke down Gerry’s arc from Season 2 and teased what might happen to the villain if Season 3 gets the green light.
The show follows Russ Holliday (Glen Powell) as he tries to redeem himself by competing under the fake identity of Chad. But Gerry has been onto the scheme since Season 1, and his suspicions finally boiled over in the second season’s finale.
Gerry’s Long Road to Villainy
Gerry’s anger started when Russ stole his spot on the South Georgia Catfish football team. But Ryan says jealousy wasn’t the main driver.
“I don’t think he really was so jealous about losing the job per se; it’s just the fact that he lost it without merit,” Ryan told TV Insider. He explained that Gerry’s fury grew from watching Russ succeed despite behaving badly.
“When you start to believe that if you do good in this world, good comes back to you, and he watches this guy, and all I know is that he’s not doing good, but good things are coming to his doorstep, that can be a lot of jet fuel for anger,” Ryan said.
That belief — that good behavior should bring good results — was betrayed by Russ’s success. It’s a classic case of cognitive dissonance, and it pushed Gerry into a spiral of resentment. His anger didn’t come from envy alone; it came from watching a man who behaved badly get rewarded while he got nothing.
The anger turned ugly fast. Gerry hinted at the budding romance between Chad and Ricky (Perry Mattfeld) to Coach Hudson (Steve Zahn). Then he attacked Russ’s best friend, Danny (Frankie A. Rodriguez).
By the finale, Gerry was blackmailing Russ after learning the truth about Chad’s secret disguise. But the tables turned when Tricia (Wynn Everett) bought the Chad Powers brand, offering protection for Russ in order to keep playing and winning. That left Gerry as an automatic threat.
The Taekwondo Dance Moment
One of the most memorable moments of Season 2 came in Episode 2, when Gerry danced around his apartment in just a jockstrap, throwing taekwondo moves as he went.
“You’d be surprised how easy it is for me to get the zoomies and to start unleashing taekwondo,” Ryan said of the sequence. “We did that many times, as you could probably imagine, because we were having a little too much fun [filming].”
The scene set up a recurring pattern in the show. Gerry’s quirks make him a fun character to play, and Ryan clearly enjoyed the physicality of the dance.
What Happens to Gerry in Season 3
The finale left Gerry in a precarious position. Police found a planted gun in his locker at school, and he went after Russ to control his next game in order to win big with bets he made.
Russ ignored the deal towards the end of the game, opting to win and risk the consequences. But as Gerry went to confront Russ on the field post-game, he was tackled by Tricia’s security detail and taken away.
Ryan’s prediction for Season 3 is grim. He said he’s waiting for a Season 3 announcement before laying his cards out, but he and Michael Waldron have already discussed where the story goes.
“Well, I’m waiting for a Season 3 announcement before I lay my cards out, but we’ve had a conversation or two about where it goes because by Episode 5, I said to Michael [Waldron] and the guys, ‘Well, I’m gonna die in the finale, right?’ I mean, there’s a Chekhov’s gun that’s been laid out now, and the feds are on my ass, so I’m a big problem to take care of,” Ryan explained.
He offered an alternative path. “They have a pretty awesome and straightforward way of getting through that, I think, from what we’ve talked about, but yeah, I think the sky’s the limit in terms of all things.”
So the question remains: will Chad Powers kill off its biggest villain, or will Gerry survive to torment Russ another season?
Gerry’s Prediction, Taken Lightly
Ryan’s prediction reads as a joke, but it carries weight. The Chekhov’s gun is real — the feds are on Gerry’s ass, and he is a big problem to take care of.
Whether that means a tragic end or a clever escape is unclear. Ryan’s wording suggests he’s open to either direction, but the setup points toward a dramatic conclusion. He’s willing to die, but he also knows there’s a straightforward way out.
