Netflix’s Dead to Me Review: Applegate and Cardellini Carry a Mystery That Never Earns Its Weight

Dead to Me review: Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini carry Netflix's black comedy about grief, lies and a hit-and-run across three seasons.

By mitch·3 min read
Two women sit together in silence, their faces marked by grief and the weight of a terrible secret.

Netflix’s Dead to Me opens with a lie, and it never stops telling them. Christina Applegate plays Jen Harding, a Laguna Beach real estate agent whose husband was killed by a hit-and-run driver. Linda Cardellini plays Judy Hale, the eccentric optimist she meets in a grief support group. Judy says she is mourning a fiancé who died of a heart attack. Neither claim is true.

A Widow Meets an Optimist

The show, created by Liz Feldman, is a black comedy-crime thriller built on that asymmetry. Jen uses anger and resentment as an outlet for her grief. Judy keeps a positive disposition. That difference pulls them together fast, and Jen grows more unhinged as she unravels the mystery of her husband’s death and Judy’s secrets.

The premise is a good one. It gives Applegate a role that lets her swing from fury to exhaustion in a single scene, and it gives Cardellini the harder job: making a woman who caused a death likable without letting her off the hook. Feldman, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Jessica Elbaum executive produce.

Three Seasons, 30 Episodes

Dead to Me premiered on May 3, 2019. Netflix renewed it for a second season in June 2019; that season arrived on May 8, 2020. A third and final season was ordered in July 2020. Production was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic until mid-2021, then delayed again by Applegate’s multiple sclerosis diagnosis. The final season was released on November 17, 2022.

That gap matters. The show was built on momentum — Jen closing in, Judy slipping away — and three years between seasons is a long time to hold a grudge on a viewer’s behalf. The last season still lands, but the energy is thinner.

In June 2019, Netflix renewed the series for a second season which was released on May 8, 2020.

Emmys and the Case for Applegate

The awards record tells its own story. At the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, Applegate was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. At the 72nd, the show took four nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series and two Lead Actress nods for Applegate and Cardellini. At the 75th, Applegate earned her third Lead Actress nomination for the final season.

Three nominations for one performance is not a fluke. It is the industry admitting the show’s engine was always her.

What the Crime Plot Costs

The crime plot is the weak part. Dead to Me wants to be a thriller and a grief study at once, and the thriller half keeps interrupting the half that works. Jen’s investigation produces twists that matter less than the scenes where the two women simply sit and talk. Feldman’s writing is sharpest when nothing is being hidden.

The supporting cast is solid without being memorable. James Marsden plays Ben Wood, Luke Roessler plays Henry Harding, Sam McCarthy plays Charlie Harding. They serve the leads rather than challenge them.

Why the Leads Carry It

Dead to Me is a two-hander carried by two actors at the top of their range, wrapped around a mystery that never quite earns its own weight. The friendship is the show. The hit-and-run is the hook that gets you there and the drag that slows you down.

It is worth watching for Applegate and Cardellini, and worth forgiving for almost everything else.
