On Thursday, Deadline held its inaugural L.A. Law Summit, where two founding partners of major law firms were recognized with honors. Patricia Glaser was given the Visionary Award, while Nina Shaw received the Game Changer Award.
At Deadline’s West LA headquarters, lawyers, agents, creators and executives gathered for an event where Glaser Weil Fink Howard Jordan & Shapiro founding partner Glaser and Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein Lezcano Bobb & Dang founding partner Shaw were introduced by Glaser Weil’s Gali Grant and Black List founder Franklin Leonard. A note from WBTV boss Channing Dungey came before their presentations.
Glaser opened with a remark about the city’s reputation for rewarding talent. “If you’re perceived, and underline the word perceived, as good, the sky’s the limit in Los Angeles,” she said. “It is truly a meritocracy, and we should be really proud of that.”
Shaw focused on the legal community’s role in supporting the arts. “I’m honored to be part of a legal community that strives to make the world better by supporting the arts,” she said. “While while much of the work that we do is not known outside of these rooms, we know our contributions matter.”
The Two Founding Partners
The two lawyers represent major law firms in the city, and the summit marked their long track records.
The Visionary Award recognized Glaser’s work as a litigator. The Game Changer Award celebrated Shaw’s influence on the industry.
The Panels That Made Up The Day
Sessions at the summit moved fast, opening with a quote from JFK and a remembrance of Glaser Weil partner Roger Howard, before turning to intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, the creator economy and artificial intelligence.
Deadline’s Executive Editor Dominic Patten, Political Editor Ted Johnson and Senior TV and Labor reporter Katie Campione moderated the panels. Deadline Editor-in-Chief Nellie Andreeva introduced the sessions.
The day opened with Courtney Kemp, Power and Nemesis co-creator, joining Blank Rome’s Cheryl S. Chang, Greenberg Glusker’s Chad R. Fitzgerald and Davis Wright Tremaine’s Nicolas Jampol. They discussed IP in a multi-platform market.
Then Stubbs Alderton & Markiles’ Cathleen Green and Davis Wright Tremaine’s Carrie Casselman joined WME Chief Legal Officer Courtney Braun and Macro CEO Charles D King to talk M&A.
After lunch, Range Media Partners’ Jack Whigham, Del Shaw’s Ethan Cohan, Greenberg Glusker’s Matt Dysart and Emmy-winning director-producer Anthony Hemingway looked at the creator economy. They examined what it means to be a creator in modern Tinseltown.
The summit closed with CAA’s Chief Compliance Officer and Deputy General Counsel Tammy Brandt, Glaser Weil’s Jesse Levin and Blank Rome’s Craig Weiner. They covered the facts, fictions and future of AI for the industry and society.
