‘DINОSAUR’ Review: Tyler’s Most Personal Album Is Messy, Ambitious and Worth Hearing as One Record

“DINОSAUR” is Tyler, The Creator’s fourth studio album, a 25-track, 69-minute sprawl that tries to hold together two separate records: one about fame, fatherhood and paranoia, and one about the kind of hip-hop production that rewards attention. It mostly succeeds at the former and stumbles at the latter. The record is dense, funny, and occasionally exhausting, but it is also Tyler’s clearest statement about what he wants to talk about as an artist.

Opening With Midnight Funkathon

The album opens with “Midnight Funkathon,” a 1:30 instrumental that sets the tone: loose, sample-heavy and built for the club. “Dinosaur” follows, a track about the pressure of being the frontman of a group that has become a movement. “French!” is a joke about accents and stereotypes, while “Car!” turns a simple question into a full-blown narrative about a stolen vehicle. “Blow” is the shortest track here, a quick burst of menace that doesn’t overstay its welcome.

Odd Toddler Through Prism

“Odd Toddler” is a character study dressed as a rap song, and it works better than it should. “Session” is a 1:29 instrumental interlude that functions as a palate cleanser. “The Kids Can Bleed” is a grim portrait of youth culture, and “Fuck You Bunch” is a brief, aggressive track that clears the air. “The Nosebleed” is a slow, atmospheric piece about being overwhelmed, and “Se7en!” brings the tempo back up with a hook that sticks.

“Prism” closes this stretch at 1:43, a short, sharp track that doesn’t quite land. “Friend Zone” and “Fuck Love” are both under two minutes and function as connective tissue rather than destinations. “OF Theme” is a quick nod to the group’s legacy, and “Pigs Fly” is a beat-driven track that leans on a sample. “Dem Hoes” is a 1:15 instrumental interlude, and “Yamaka” is a track about religious hypocrisy.

Dazed/Amazed Through Plastic Cup

“Dazed/Amazed” is a 1:41 instrumental that sets up the album’s darker turn. “Rape” is the track that made headlines, and it is blunt, uncomfortable and effective. “Plastic Cup” is a lighter, more playful track that feels like a breath of fresh air after the tension of the previous few songs.

“DINОSAUR” is a messy, ambitious record that rewards patience. The shorter tracks are often filler, but the longer ones — “The Nosebleed,” “Rape,” “Pale” — are some of the best Tyler has ever made. The album is uneven, but its ambition is real.
