The Dungeon Crawler Carl series is set to arrive at your tabletop this fall, and its creator is positioning it as the next major step for a property that began as a niche LitRPG title before growing into a bestselling sensation.

Matt Dinniman’s chaotic adventures of Carl and Princess Donut have exploded in popularity through both the novels and Jeff Hays’ acclaimed audiobooks. The eighth installment, A Parade of Horribles, became an instant #1 New York Times bestseller following its May 2026 release.

From Novel to Franchise

The mainline story is drawing near its close. Dinniman has set to work on Book 9, presently bearing the working title The Beautiful Place, which is anticipated to bring the series to an end across two physical volumes. Yet the franchise shows no sign of slowing down, with plans already in motion for it to grow into a full-blown juggernaut IP that spans multiple mediums.

The official Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG is set to arrive later this year as one of the franchise’s biggest expansions yet, letting fans step into the World Dungeon themselves. This November release follows the game’s official next major expansion for the series (via RGS).

The Crowdfunding Campaign

Its record-breaking crowdfunding campaign brought in more than $13 million for the official tabletop RPG, a clear sign of how much the franchise has grown in popularity recently. Those who backed the project will get early access to the World Dungeon.

Renegade Game Studios says physical crowdfunding fulfillment is set to start in October 2026, though the sheer volume of orders suggests it will stretch across roughly six to eight weeks instead of reaching everyone at once. Digital copies of the RPG materials have already started shipping to eligible backers.

What the RPG Includes

This tabletop game uses a skill-focused system meant to bring the books’ perilous televised World Dungeon to life. It allows players to take on the roles of known figures such as Carl, Princess Donut, Florin, and Prepotente, or build their own crawler by choosing from many races, classes, backgrounds, and skills.

The campaigns borrow many ideas from Dungeon Crawler Carl, such as achievements, followers, viewers, loot boxes, crafting, bosses, rival crawlers, gods, and factions, with the System AI always lurking in the background. Renegade has announced ongoing support via expansions and a digital Season Pass, which runs from November 2026 through October 2027.

A preorder for the Core Rulebook and Starter Set is currently open, along with a selection of accessories such as miniatures, dice, and a GM screen.

The Solo Game

The campaign funding also included Dungeon Crawler Carl: Unstoppable, a standalone solo or two-player cooperative card-crafting game created by John D. Clair. Players start with Carl or Donut, then upgrade their characters using sleeved cards as they fight through the dungeon.

The core game spans the first three floors, with the Iron Tangle expansion bringing the Fourth Floor into play and Crawler Chaos adding more playable characters to the mix. The RPG’s companion work, Unstoppable, is currently set for retail release in November 2026.

The Novels Behind It

Penguin Random House released the original novel Dungeon Crawler Carl on September 21, 2020, a work that spans 444 pages and carries the ISBN number 979-8688591507.

A Surprising Success Story

Dinniman’s chaotic adventures of Carl and Princess Donut have gone from a niche LitRPG series to one of the genre’s most surprising success stories in just a few short years. The franchise has moved far beyond its origins as a book, and the RPG’s $13 million crowdfunding total shows just how deep the fandom runs.

This fall, fans get a double treat with the RPG and Unstoppable both launching at the same time, in November.
