An 11-year-old was rushed to the hospital after an e-scooter crash in Fort Bend County. The child’s death has set off a question about the safety of electric bikes, and new national data offers a sober answer: e-bike crashes lead to more serious injuries than traditional bike crashes.

The data comes from a national review by Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives. It does not settle the broader question of whether e-bike riders crash more often than traditional bike riders. But it does show that when an e-bike rider does crash, the injuries tend to be far worse.

The Data Behind the Question

ABC13, the Houston affiliate, looked into the numbers after the child’s death. Local agencies do not always track whether a crash involves a traditional bike, an e-bike, or a scooter. That makes direct comparisons within a single city difficult.

But the national picture is clear. Emergency visits tied to e-bike crashes more than doubled between 2022 and 2024. Fatalities rose from zero nationwide in 2017 to 97 in 2024.

Joe Cutrufo, the executive director of Bike Houston, described the shift in commuter life that made this data possible. “It gets really hot here, and you don’t have to sweat as much when you are on an e-bike,” he said. “If you have had a knee injury or you have arthritis or you just can’t manage long distances on a regular bike, an e-bike is a great tool for you because it helps extend your range.”

Why the Numbers Matter

The review found no clear evidence that e-bike or traditional bike riders crash more often. That means the total risk of crashing is not settled. But the severity of those crashes tells a different story.

When an e-bike rider crashes, the injuries are more serious. They include head, neck, and face injuries, and even traumatic brain injuries. That pattern held across the country as e-bike use grew.

Cutrufo pointed to the speed problem directly. Some e-bikes can go up to 20 miles an hour, which he finds too fast for most children. He encouraged parents to visit a local bike shop rather than buying online.

“They have the equipment that you need; they have the knowledge that you need,” Cutrufo said. “When you shop for an e-bike online, sometimes you don’t know exactly what you are getting. So do your research, but also talk to an expert; go to a local bike shop.”

The data is not a warning to stop using e-bikes. It is a warning to understand what you are buying.

E-bikes are a tool, and like any tool, they come with limits. Riders need to know what they are getting before they buy, and they need to know what the device can do. A local shop can offer that knowledge.

Cutrufo also drew a sharp line between e-bikes and e-motor bikes. He said e-motor bikes have become more popular but should not be lumped in with e-bikes. Only adults with experience on motorized bikes should ride them, and they are generally not safe for children in an urban setting with cars.

The review’s conclusion is simple: e-bike crashes are more severe. That severity is the core of the story, and it is the part that riders need to keep in mind.

The data is not comforting. It is just the truth of what happens when e-bikes crash. And the numbers show that truth clearly.
