Ivan Veerick’s Plan
The villain is Ivan Veerick, a former member of the Expendables who now runs a private army protecting an oil pipeline. He is played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, who spends most of the film talking in a thick accent while his henchmen do the fighting. The setup is simple: the Expendables need to stop him, save a hostage, and get out alive. That simplicity is the problem. The film never bothers to make the stakes feel urgent.
Statham Leads Again
Jason Statham leads the group again, and he gets the best lines and the most physical comedy. His scenes with Dolph Lundgren, as the Expendables’ leader, are the film’s highlight. The chemistry between the two is genuine, and their arguments about tactics carry some weight. But even these moments are undercut by the surrounding chaos.
The Other Guys
Bruce Willis shows up as a CIA agent who helps the Expendables, and Randy Couture appears as a mentor figure. Both performances are fine, but neither gets enough screen time to matter. Terry Crews and Randy Couture deliver the film’s biggest laughs, mostly through their physicality rather than dialogue. Silvester Stallone, who directs and stars, seems content to let everyone else do the heavy lifting.
The Action
The action sequences are loud and busy, with helicopters, explosions, and slow-motion shots of bullets flying. They are also often hard to follow. The film cuts away from key moments of conflict, favoring wide shots over the actual violence.
