Falling Skies ran for five seasons on TNT, from June 19, 2011 to August 30, 2015 — 52 episodes of alien occupation, militia politics and a history professor trying to keep his sons alive. On January 1, 2026, the whole run arrived on Netflix, which is how a lot of people will meet it for the first time.

A History Professor Leads the Massachusetts Militia
Robert Rodat created the series, and Steven Spielberg executive produced it. It was produced by DreamWorks Television, and from 2014 to 2015 by Amblin Television. Noah Wyle plays Tom Mason, a former history professor who becomes third-in-command of the Massachusetts Militia Regiment, behind Captain Weaver and retired Colonel Porter. The regiment is a mix of remnant military personnel, veterans and civilians who fled Boston after the invasion.
Wyle said he took the part partly for his kids. “With the birth of my kids, I started to really look at my career through their eyes more than my own,” he said. He also related to the character: “I identified with Tom’s devotion to his sons, and admired his sense of social duty.”
Spielberg Wanted Wyle From ER
Spielberg had wanted Wyle for Saving Private Ryan in 1998 but scheduling conflicts kept them apart. He knew Wyle from ER, which his company produced, and was determined to work with him again. Moon Bloodgood was cast as Dr. Anne Glass in July 2009 and did not audition. “When you get handed a script and they tell you it’s Bob Rodat and Steven Spielberg, you’re immediately drawn to it,” she said.
Weaver, Pope and the Rest of the Regiment
Will Patton plays Captain Daniel Weaver. Colin Cunningham plays John Pope. Drew Roy, Connor Jessup and Maxim Knight play Tom’s sons Hal, Ben and Matt. Sarah Carter is Maggie, Mpho Koaho is Anthony, Doug Jones is Cochise. The source also lists Jessy Schram as Karen Nadler, Seychelle Gabriel as Lourdes, Peter Shinkoda and Scarlett Byrne among the cast.
Two Emmy Nominations and 14 Saturn Nods
Falling Skies was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Special Visual Effects, and 14 Saturn Awards, including three for Best Television Presentation.

What Holds Up
The family story holds up best. Tom’s devotion to his sons gives the show a spine that most alien-invasion series lack. The action is competent, the effects earned those Emmy nominations, and Wyle carries the quieter scenes without straining.
The middle stretch is where this viewer lost patience. The show keeps adding factions and mysteries when the strongest material is already there: a small group of people deciding who to trust. That is an impression of the viewing, not a claim the source makes. Pope is the sharpest example. Cunningham plays him as a genuine threat and a genuine nuisance, and the show is better whenever he is on screen.
Whether Netflix gives Falling Skies a second life is an open question. It sat in a crowded field of post-apocalyptic series, and this paper would argue it deserved more attention than it got. It is not a great show. It is a good one with a clear idea and a lead who believed in it.
