Netflix didn’t make Weak Hero. Wavve did, and the distinction matters more than it should.
The first season of Weak Hero arrived on Wavve on November 18, 2022, three episodes of it having already screened at the 27th Busan International Film Festival that October. The second season landed on Netflix on April 25, 2025 as a Netflix Original. Two seasons, 16 episodes, and a gap of more than two years between them. That gap is the story of the show’s life as much as anything that happens on screen, and it is worth understanding before you press play.

Yeon Si-eun and the Friends He Didn’t Ask For
Weak Hero is built on a simple reversal. Yeon Si-eun, played by Park Ji-hoon, is a gifted student and an introvert, and the show hands him a world of bullies and violent opponents he never went looking for. The synopsis is blunt about the mechanism: unexpected friends, and a protagonist who does not grasp how dangerous his world is about to become.
That is the engine. A quiet kid, a school full of people who want to hurt him, and a set of allies who arrive sideways rather than on schedule. Created by Yoo Soo-min and Han Jun-hee, with Yoo writing and directing alongside Kim Jin-seok and Park Dan-hee, the series is adapted from the Naver webtoon Weak Hero by Seopass and Kim Jin-seok (Razen), first published in 2018. The webtoon is the foundation, and the show knows it.
A Cast That Carries the Hallways
The ensemble is the reason the thing holds. Park Ji-hoon anchors it as Yeon Si-eun. Choi Hyun-wook plays Ahn Su-ho. Hong Kyung is Oh Beom-seok, Ryeoun is Park Hu-min, and Choi Min-yeong is Seo Jun-tae. Yoo Su-bin plays Choi Hyo-man, Cha Woo-min plays Kang Woo-young, Bae Na-ra plays Na Baek-jin, Lee Min-jae plays Go Hyun-tak, and Lee Jun-young plays Geum Seong-je. Cha Se-jin turns up as a basketball club member, which tells you the show is willing to populate its edges rather than leave them bare.
Action & Adventure and Drama are the listed genres, and the pairing is honest. Weak Hero does not pretend the fights are the point, but it does not pretend they are incidental either. The violence is the pressure the characters live under, and the drama is what they do while under it.
The Release Schedule, and Why It Split the Show in Two
| Season | Episodes | Platform | Release date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Season 1 | — | Wavve | November 18, 2022 |
| Season 2 | — | Netflix | April 25, 2025 |
Sixteen episodes across two seasons, split by platform and by years. The first three episodes premiered at Busan in October 2022, ahead of the Wavve launch. The second season arrived in April 2025 as a Netflix Original.
What the Score Actually Says
The audience score for Weak Hero sits at 8.7 out of 10 on TMDB, drawn from 531 votes. That is a real sample, and it is the number this review lands on.
Here is the case for it. Weak Hero takes a premise that could have been thin — gifted loner versus the school — and gives it enough cast and enough patience to breathe. The gap between seasons did not kill it, which is more than most shows can claim. The webtoon adaptation gives the series a deep well of story to draw from.
Here is the case against. Sixteen episodes is a short run for a story with this many named characters, and the show’s structure — friends arriving unexpectedly, danger escalating past the protagonist’s understanding — is a shape we have seen before. The Busan premiere of three episodes was a strong opening move, but it also put the show in front of a festival audience most viewers never joined.
The 8.7 is not a verdict on ambition. It is a verdict on execution, and the execution is steady. Park Ji-hoon’s Yeon Si-eun is the load-bearing performance, and the supporting cast does not collapse around him. That is harder to pull off than it sounds.
The part worth watching is the second season. A Netflix Original release in April 2025 put Weak Hero in front of an audience the Wavve launch never reached. Whether that reads as confidence or caution depends on what you wanted from it.
Weak Hero is not a show that will change what you think television can do. It is a show that does one thing carefully and does not waste your time doing it. The webtoon has run since 2018. The series has run since 2022. Both are still standing.
