The list opens with Planet of the Apes, a movie where the time travel is one-way and grounded in actual physics. Astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) travels near the speed of light on a space mission, then crash-lands on a mysterious planet. By the end, he realizes the planet is Earth far into the future.

This kind of forward time travel is entirely possible. Time moves slower the faster you go, a phenomenon called time dilation. Satellites orbiting Earth already experience it, moving through time slightly differently than we do on the ground.

Instead, the Avengers go back to steal items, then return to the present to use them. Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) thinks this will alter history, but Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) explains that it won’t. Time would branch off and create new timelines where the objects go missing.

British physicist David Deutsch has proposed that any time travel that alters the past would not change the timeline but create a brand new one. This makes use of the Many Worlds Interpretation, a legitimate, scientifically-recognized understanding of quantum mechanics. The movie also acknowledges that Tony Stark’s Time-Space GPS operates in the quantum realm, where time itself behaves very differently.

Primer rounds out the list. This low-budget 2004 film requires your utmost attention at every turn. Written and directed by Shane Carruth, who also stars as one of the two main characters, the movie is often considered the most scientifically thought-out time travel movie ever.

Carruth has an undergraduate degree in mathematics and has been a software engineer, and he used his technical know-how to craft a story about two engineers who accidentally discover the means to travel backwards through time during a garage experiment involving gravity. They build a box large enough for both to fit inside and use it freely, buying stocks before prices rise and creating doubles of themselves.

The list pairs actual quantum physics with genuine affection for the films. It is not mocking the movies for being silly; it is praising them for doing the science homework.

Interstellar leans on a real physicist who helped develop the concept. Planet of the Apes uses a physics principle anyone can grasp. Endgame embraces a real interpretation of quantum mechanics. And Primer is built by a director with real technical credentials.
